Morrison Lake mine rejected by B.C. government

Some good news coming out of Canada and some potential bad PR for a certain mine project in Alaska that sits on top of the world's greatest sockeye run.

Plans for a copper and gold mine in the province’s northwest have been rejected by the B.C. government because it could endanger salmon in the Skeena River.

The proposed Morrison Mine project was planned to be located directly beside Morrison Lake, at the headwaters of the Skeena River, the second-largest producer of sockeye salmon in B.C.

The government decision was only the second time a mine has been rejected in the history of B.C. environmental review.

It's all fun and games until somebody loses an eye

"He saw what he thought was going to be dinner, and took a shot at it. He either missed dinner or hit the rock right next to it, and that bullet ricocheted back and hit him in the head," said Greg Elwin of the Thurston County Sheriff's Office.

The maximum penalty for shooting a fish with a gun is one year in jail.

Underwater War: Killing lake trout to save cutthroat in Yellowstone Park

A detailed overview of fight against lake trout in Yellowstone Lake.

The lake trout program on Yellowstone Lake is one of the biggest suppression efforts in the country — perhaps only work on the Great Lakes to decrease lamprey is larger, Koel said.

It is believed if 50 percent of the lake trout population can be removed each year for six consecutive years, the population can be managed at a much lower cost, said Ken Barrett, native fish campaign manager with the Yellowstone Park Foundation.

Lake trout gives fisherman the finger

When Haans Galassi of Colbert got a call from the Bonner County sheriff this morning, he had a feeling he knew what it was about.

“The sheriff called me and told me he had a strange story to tell me,” said the 31-year-old project manager for a Sandpoint-based software developer.

“He said that a fisherman was out on Priest Lake, and I pretty much knew exactly what he was going to say at that point,” Galassi said.

“I was like: Let me guess, they found my fingers in a fish.”
