Yellowstone Invites Anglers To “Talk Trout”

The National Park Service wants to talk trout in Yellowstone.

Yellowstone is known as a prime destination for anglers. However, protecting and preserving the park’s world class trout fisheries is an ever increasing challenge.

Park staff members will travel to nearby communities in the coming weeks to talk with anglers about the ongoing efforts to restore native fish species, the threat of aquatic invasive species and recent changes to fishing regulations.

In addition to the general public, local fly shop employees and fishing guides are encouraged to attend one of the following outreach meetings:

Mon., April 28 - Holiday Inn, 315 Yellowstone Ave. West Yellowstone
Tues., April 29 - Wort Hotel, 50 North Glenwood St. Jackson
Wed., April 30 in Cody, Wyo. at the Holiday Inn, 1701 Sheridan Ave.
Mon., May 5 - Best Western Plus GranTree Inn, 1325 N 7th Ave. Bozeman
Tues., May 6 - Best Western Yellowstone Inn, 1515 W Park St. Livingston
Wed., May 7 - Holiday Inn Grand Montana Billings, 5500 Midland Rd. Billings

The meetings will begin with a brief presentation at 6:30 p.m., followed by a question and answer session and discussion.

"And tubing would be great on the Gros Ventre on a hot day"

A new bill introduced by Wyoming Rep. Cynthia Lummis would nullify longstanding federal regulations that prohibit hand-propelled boating on rivers and streams in Yellowstone National Park and on some waters not currently open in Grand Teton National Park.

Not everyone agrees that opening more park waters to paddlers is a good idea.

Fish fry, anyone?

More then 300,000 lake trout haluled out of Yellowstone Lake this year.

That haul brings to more than 1.1 million the number of lake trout removed from the lake since they were first discovered in 1994.

Underwater War: Killing lake trout to save cutthroat in Yellowstone Park

A detailed overview of fight against lake trout in Yellowstone Lake.

The lake trout program on Yellowstone Lake is one of the biggest suppression efforts in the country — perhaps only work on the Great Lakes to decrease lamprey is larger, Koel said.

It is believed if 50 percent of the lake trout population can be removed each year for six consecutive years, the population can be managed at a much lower cost, said Ken Barrett, native fish campaign manager with the Yellowstone Park Foundation.

Warm water closes Yellowstone rivers to fishing

A week after an unrelenting heat wave forced Montana to put restrictions on three rivers, Yellowstone Park officials have announced they're closing fishing on portions of three rivers because of unusually warm water temperatures.

Yellowstone officials say the forecast calls for more warm weather and that could cause additional areas to be closed to fishing.
