Restoration Spotlight: The Little Juniata

A Pennsylvania river that once was an "open sewer" is being restored with the help of fishermen, paddlers and others who belong to the Little Juniata River Association, led by Bill Anderson of Altoona, Pa. The nonprofit has helped establish roughly five miles of public fishing easements along the river, which now offers Class A wild brown trout habitat.

New Map Plots North America’s Bounty of Rivers

More of North America’s land is covered by rivers than we thought, according to a new map. Scientists came up with a way to use satellite images to estimate the width of rivers and found that previous methods tended to underestimate how wide they are. The discovery could have implications for studies of flood risk as well as climate change impacts.

Mapping Inactive Metal Mines Across the US

On August 5, the Animas River in southwestern Colorado was subjected to at least a 3,000,000 gallon discharge of acidic, metal-laden mine waste from the Gold King Mine when contractors for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) accidentally breached a mine pool while investigating a leak from the inactive mine. 

Tens of thousands of these toxic sites lie scattered across the nation.

With all the attention on the problem of abandoned and inactive mines SkyTruth thought they would try to map some of these other mines that haven't made headlines (yet).

Tintina Resources, Inc. a Vancouver, B.C. based mining company controlled by an Australian mining corporation and New York hedge fund managers is proposing to develop a huge underground copper mine on 12,000 acres of private land adjacent to Sheep Creek, a major headwater stream that produces half of the tributary spawning trout in the Smith River drainage.
