"We can now say that restoration of anadromous salmon in Olympic National Park is underway"

Adult chinook salmon were observed on the Elwha River in Olympic National Park, park officials and biologists reported, less than five months after removal of one of the two dams.

These are the first observed Elwha River salmon to naturally migrate upstream into the park, according to a statement released by the park.

Kitzhaber seeks peace in Columbia salmon wars

Trying to head off a ballot measure to ban gillnetting for salmon on the Oregon side of the lower Columbia River, Gov. John Kitzhaber has told state fisheries managers to come up with new regulations that would accomplish a similar goal while still keeping gillnetters on the water.

Meanwhile.....

On the Washington side of the river, Department of Fish and Wildlife Regional Director Guy Norman said they hoped to work out a way to keep Washington's regulations compatible with Oregon's, but reserved the right to go their own way.

Salmon sex delayed by global warming

Global warming may be putting a freeze on Atlantic salmon sex. Fishing records from anglers on 59 Norwegian rivers show that more and more salmon are staying out at sea for two or more winters - instead of one - before migrating back upriver to mate.
