Cutthroat trout stage comeback on Hoback

The Hoback River’s cutthroat fishery has bounced back, now that the Wyoming Game and Fish Department has stopped stocking it with hatchery-raised fish.

Unfortunatley the Hoback is now threatened by natural gas development and made American River's list of America's Most Endangered Rivers.

The Noble Basin sits in the shadow of the Wyoming Range, most of which was protected from energy development by Congress in 2009.  But previous leases bought by energy companies can still be developed, and that includes one proposal for 136 wells to be drilled by Texas based Plains Exploration and Production (PXP).

One just needs to look at what gas drilling has done to the area surrounding Pinedale to see why the door should not be opened to gas development in the Noble Basin.

U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service ends Connecticut River salmon restoration

After 45 years of raising Atlantic salmon in New England for a four-state effort to restore the fish to the Connecticut River, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service is moving out of the salmon hatchery business.

The move comes due to a lack of recovery and the low numbers returning to the river.

We don't know why priapiumfish evolved their peculiar gonads

The male fish, a Phallostethus cuulong just 2 centimetres long, weaves between drifting vegetation in the sluggish waters of a canal. He closes in on a female, swims alongside her and tries to mate with her.

But to an outside observer, he seems to be doing it wrong. His head is right next to the female's, but he's at a 45-degree angle so his rear end is well below hers. Sounds misguided, but actually he's doing it exactly right – it's just that his gonads are on his head.

”Right now, all the water is going to the Central Valley

The Hoopa Vally Tribe have asked the Bureau of Reclamarition to release more water from the Trinity into the Klamath to prevent another possible salmon kill this fall.

The Trinity River is the Klamath's largest tributary, and water is often diverted from the river to farmers and residents of Southern California. After intervention by Dick Cheney in 2002, the diversion ordered led to a massive salmon kill on the Klamath.
