Tourism Fury Over Fly Fishing ‘Tsunami’

In addition to the the collective outcry from the fly fishing industry, Bahamian trade organizations are also lobbying hard against the proposed changes to the Fisheries Resources Act.

A furious tourism industry is uniting to oppose the new Fly Fishing law and regulations, fearing it will cost the Bahamas millions of dollars and “further erode the competitive position” of the sector.

The Bahamas Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA) is uniting with the Grand Bahama and Out Island Promotion Boards, plus the Marina Operators of the Bahamas (MOB), to oppose proposed amendments they fear will hit the tourism industry “like a tsunami”.

The sector, and its associations, are especially concerned that the planned changes to the Fisheries Resources (Jurisdiction and Conservation) Act will create more ‘red tape’ and price the Bahamas out of the market.

Breaking News From Planet Bullshit

House Republicans unveil latest attempt to block Obama's climate and clean water rules.

Along with prohibiting the EPA from implementing those regulations, the bill would reduce the EPA’s funding by $718 million, a 9 percent reduction from fiscal year 2015 levels. According to the Hill, the EPA has already had its funding decreased by 20 percent since Republicans took the House in 2011.

In addition, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service would be cut by $8 million, and the Department of Interior would be forced to stop giving federal protection to endangered gray wolves in Midwestern states.

Return of the fish wars: Hatchery pits environmentalists against tribe

Some quality in depth coverage of the fight over the misguided hatchery program on the Elwha from Al Jazerra America.

LINK

The Elwha is not the only watershed where the debate over hatchery programs is occuring. NOAA's recent decision to withdraw its draft environmental impact statement (EIS) for Puget Sound Hatcheries and opt for a cursory environmental assessment (EA) is likely a direct result of tribal influence in Washington DC.
