Colorado River Cutthroat Trout Won't Get Federal Protection

The loss of historic habitat for the Colorado River cutthroat trout is not enough to grant federal protection, a federal judge ruled.

Despite being flushed out of 86 percent of what was once its home range, U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman upheld decisions by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Department of Interior that identify the subspecies as healthy enough to survive on its own.

200 years ago, "the trout occupied a range of approximately 21,386 stream miles, running through Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and possibly Arizona. Currently, the trout occupies 3022 miles, or 14%, of its historic range, and is found in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming."

Chesapeake Bay Striper Young of the Year Reproduction at Record Low

Stiripers Forever shares some very disturbing news.

Maryland officials have released information on the 2012 Young of the Year count for striped bass, and it is very bad.

Maryland officials blame the poor results on weather, and they say that there are normal ups and downs in the process. However if you look at the graph that appears in the link, and study the statistics a bit, you will see that spawning success over the last 5 to 10 years is about half of what it was during the 1990s before the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission allowed the commercial catch to return to levels reached prior to the crash of the 70s.

The algae bloom is visible from space

A 3,800-square-mile algae bloom in the Pacific Ocean off Canada's British Columbia has been traced to a California businessman who promised a local tribe he could help their salmon runs by fertilizing the ocean with iron.

As controversy mounts over the revelations that an American businessman conducted a massive ocean fertilisation test, dumping around 100 tonnes of iron sulphate off Canada's coast, it has emerged the Canadian government may have known about the geoengineering scheme and not stopped it.
