Cutting the Tar Sands Tentacle with Rick Bass and David James Duncan

Here is a link to the audio from last week's Orion Community Conversation with authors Rick Bass and David James Duncan.

As the massive mega-load truck convoys roll into Montana, they create a beastly "tar sands tentacle" all the way to Canada. Resistance to it is mounting. Bass and Duncan set aside other writing projects recently to coauthor a vitally important book on the topic, The Heart of the Monster. During this free live event, they will read from the book, lead a discussion of what is being done to combat "the haul," and answer your questions.

Fish Schtick Episodes 56 and 57

We closed out the 2010 Fish Schtick campaign with two new episodes.

Episode 56 - Amanda Switzer

Though she originally went to school to become a landscape architect, Amanda Switzer became a fishing guide after working for one year too long in an office. Unhappy with the ho-hum buzz of everyday work, she thanked her boss for not firing her, politely quit, bought a flats boat and started a flyfishing-guide business in her home waters of eastern Long Island. She’s 25 years into it and now she’s building a new rod company – think she’s got a few stories to tell?

Episode 57 - Best of 2010

It’s that year-end time when everybody looks back at the peaks and valleys of the year, the hits and misses, the highs and the lows. This show is dedicated to that – some of our favorite Fish Schtick guests and moments from the year gone by.

Dirt Bag Diaries - What We Had

Fitz Cahall had never done an episode about fly fishing on the Dirtbag Diaires, that's because he was waiting for the right one.

It was worth the wait.

Mark Rutherford and John Merritt grew up sharing the same sand box. As they grew up, they each followed separate paths. John had a successful career in the Chicago financial world. Mark moved to Alaska and raised a family in tiny cabin he built with his own hands. Twenty years ago, Mark began a successful adventure fly fishing guide service in the Bristol Bay region. An avid fisherman, John got in touch with Mark and scheduled a trip. On that first trip, John revealed that he had been diagnosed with M.S. Ten years prior, doctors told him he had seven years to live. That first trip marked the beginning of decade of trips, each more adventurous than the last. Today, we are headed up stream to the confluence of several lives. Friendships are a bit like rivers -- when they converge, they swell into something greater.

Fish Schtick Episode 53 – Fish and Adventure Podcast Spectacular

The holidays are coming, which means travel time for most of us. And travel time is a GREAT time to load up you iPod or MP3 player with a bunch of your favorite shows. We wanted to share some of OUR favorite podcasts with you, so on today’s show, four hosts from four of our favorite podcasts!

We’ve got Zach Matthews from the Itinerant Angler. Zach is also the Southeast Field Editor for Fly Fisherman magazine, and he’s a regular contributor to American Angler magazine. You’ve seen his stuff in Fly Rod & Reel, The Drake and a bunch of others.

Fitz Cahall is the man behind the Dirtbag Diaries which isn’t as much a fishing podcast as it is an adventure podcast. A lot of the stories are about people who climb mountains or strike out on international adventures. His stories are as much about the adventurers as the adventures, and they’re really, really good.

Tom Rosenbauer hosts the Orvis Fly Fishing Podcasts. Tom’s name is synonymous with fly fishing culture as we know it, he has been with the Orvis Company for over 30 years. He’s been a fishing school instructor, copywriter, public relations director, merchandise manager, and was editor of The Orvis News for 10 years. He is currently Marketing Director for Orvis Rod and Tackle.

Rick Coffman is a fly angler from the Ozarks. His career has found him behind the microphone at radio stations in Springfield, Missouri, tons of different live venues, and now in a monthly podcast called Liv2FlyFish Radio. His guests tend to center on the White River drainage – some of the best big-trout waters in the country, maybe the world.

You can listen to the entire episode at Mauro Media where you will also find a link if you care to download the show off iTunes.

The Fish Schtick is sponsored by Green Tackle, providing environmentally responsible fishing products to anglers of all skill levels.
