Fighting Goliath

The goal of this campaign is to protect the beautiful Lochsa and Clearwater rivers of north central Idaho from the oil industry and tar sands-bound “megaload” traffic on U.S. Highway 12. These two rivers were among the first protected by the federal Wild & Scenic Rivers Act in 1968.

Confrontation imminent as Nez Perce vow to stop megaload

The Idaho Department of Transportation and Omega Morgan are defying the U.S. Forest Service's jurisdiction over moving megaloads along Highway 12.

A showdown has been anticipated since the Idaho Transportation Department officials granted a permit to Oregon-based Omega Morgan to move a 225 foot long and 21 foot wide water purification unit over the objections of the Nez Perce tribe and the U.S. Forest Service. The issue grew heated as the shipper announced plans to start moving the load last night.

The load would be 255 feet long and 21 feet wide

One of the fears of those opposed to the massive megaload shipments on Highway 12 was that it would create a permanent industrial transportation route through a National Forest and Wild and Scenic corridor. Thanks to a judges ruling, the Forest Service can no longer sit idly by while the Idaho Department of Transportation green lights megaload permits.

The U.S. Forest Service has told the Idaho Department of Transportation it can't support an application for a massive shipment to move on U.S. Highway 12 across northern Idaho and into Montana.

The agency will review any load that requires traffic to be fully stopped, can't complete the route in 12 hours, or that requires physical modification of the roadway or nearby vegetation.

The Omega Morgan load hits all three categories.

Welcome to Highway 12 - Your Scenic High and Wide Industrial Corridor

New megaloads are rolling across Highway 12 and they don't belong to Exxon Mobil. Nope, this time it's Weyerhauser shipping some giant evaporators to a pulp mill in Northern Alberta.

One of the fears surrounding the use of Highway 12 for Exxon's tar sands shipments was that it would establish an industrial high wide corridor on one of America's most scenic byways, well we're here folks.

Dick of the Week

Thanks to Idahao Transportation Department Director Brian Ness, ExxonMobil now has permission to ship 200 of its "megaloads" of oil field equipment through Idaho on Highway 12.

The bad news for ExxonMobile and their enablers is that their loads still can't cross Lolo Pass into Montana.
