Acromioplasty Surgery - Attention all Spey Manufacturers

Shoulder Impingement is a painful condition caused by compression of rotator cuff tendons by the shoulder blade when the arm is raised.  According to my orthopedist (ex team Dr. for our local major Pac-10 university) when the patient is younger, the condition is caused by repetitive over head motion sports such as baseball or swimming.  Moving forward he will now add fly fishing to that list.  Single handed rod casting to be specific.

After months of PT and little improvement, I'm biting the bullet today and having acromioplasty surgery.  In fact, it's possible that the tool used to bore out more breathing room in my shoulder is sizzling as we speak. And, in some Northwest flow, there's bound to be a fish or two with a smirky mandible.

As spey brands/manufactureres plan for their 2010 marketing campaigns, they may consider adding another value point to their positioning statements.  And, I'm their man if they need endorsement.

What if they threw a tradeshow and nobody came?

The continuing saga of what was the Fly Fishing Retailer show continues.

This morning Nielson sent out a press release inviting all the fly fishing brands to their Outdoor Retailer show in Salt Lake. If you head to the Fly Fishing Retailer website right now it is an open invitation to Salt Lake in August, the page banner is at the top of this post.

Thirty minutes or so later AFFTA put out a press release stating their reasons for not formally partnering up with Outdoor Retailer and promising further updates on their show plans for 2010....don't hold your breath.

You can read the news and both press releases at MidCurrent.

"Just because you eschew felt, does not make you some sort of environmental hero."

That's the money quote from Monday's Phil Monahan's Fine Lines column on MidCurrent. We would add that just because your company made the choice to only offer sticky rubber does not make you some sort of enviro friendly brand.

The issue of invasive species transport is much more complex than one's sole choice. As Phil points out, clean dry and inspect is the critical step that anglers can take to help prevent the spread of invasive species........and don't forget to clean dry and inspect the dog, the drift boat, the trailer, the anchor line or anything else that was in the water.

Scientific Anglers Launches New Website

I just got an e-mail alert from S.A. about their new website launch. In addition to their boiler plate product beta, the site offers some useful resources and a community page. If you register at the new site they are also promising future exclusive offers. My e-mail alert included a deal for $15 off any purchase of $75 dollars or more at participating on-line retailers.

New Analysis Finds Anglo American’s Pebble Mine Project Poses Significant Risks for Investors

MEDIA ADVISORY FOR THURSDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2009
New Analysis Finds Anglo American’s Pebble Mine Project Poses
Significant Risks for Investors

WASHINGTON –  A new investor analysis to be released this Thursday, October 29th, details the legal, political, financial, engineering and reputational risks that Anglo American plc faces in developing the Pebble Mine Project in the headwaters of Bristol Bay in southwest Alaska.

Anglo American is cutting its capital expenditures this year by 50 percent to relieve pressure on its balance sheet. Meanwhile, company officials still face mounting and potentially costly obstacles with the Pebble Project – all of which should give investors pause.  London-based Anglo American has a joint 50-50 venture with British Columbia-based Northern Dynasty Minerals Ltd. – the Pebble Limited Partnership – to pursue the Pebble Mine Project.

The controversial project faces unprecedented opposition from local residents and from commercial and sport fishing industries, which generate $250 to $320 million in annual revenue in Alaska and support tens of thousands of U.S. jobs. More than a dozen U.S. and U.K. jewelers with estimated sales of $3.5 billion also oppose the project.

Researchers Bonnie Gestring with the Washington, D.C.-based conservation group Earthworks, and Steve Herz, an attorney who advises non-profits on international environmental and human rights law, prepared the report. U.S. and U.K. investment analysts and scientists familiar with the Pebble Mine Project reviewed the report.
