To toast the California company’s 40 years of accomplishments New Belgium Brewing has partnered with Patagonia to create California Route, an organic California common-style beer. Consistent with Patagonia’s long-standing commitment to organics, the beer is brewed with certified organic ingredients.
The beer has an aromatic blast of citrusy Cascade hops and a heavy dose of noble hallertau. The addition of organic Munich specialty malt builds complexity with hints of freshly baked bread. California Route is 5.5% ABV and will be available in the following markets: Seattle, Portland, Chicago, Boulder, Denver, Boston, NYC, Santa Monica, San Francisco, Palo Alto, Cardiff and Ventura.
Patagonia played a key role throughout the development of the beer, and when it came time to naming the beer, California Route was at the top of the list. The name pays homage to the California Route on Patagonia’s Mount Fitz Roy. First climbed in 1968 by Yvon Chouinard, Doug Tompkins, Dick Dorworth, Lito Tejada-Flores and Chris Jones, the California Route is considered a Patagonia classic, with good rock and fun free-climbing in a wildly beautiful setting.

They flew in from rural Alaska, from Albuquerque, South Boston and Traverse City, Michigan, where they work to stop dams, preserve native forest, create urban farms and develop regional water-management plans. Coming together at Fallen Leaf Lake (near Lake Tahoe, Calif.), Sept. 11-15, for Patagonia’s Tools for Grassroots Activists conference, some 74 environmental activists from distant corners of the country and everywhere in between took a break from their often solitary, usually underpaid nonprofit existences to try to become more effective advocates for the natural world.

Over the past two years, Patagonia’s major environmental campaign has been Our Common Waters. Focusing on water scarcity, broken rivers and pollution, as well as Patagonia’s use of water as a company, the campaign influenced Patagonia’s impact on water and brought awareness to one simple fact: the more water people use, the less there is for everything else.
Presented annually to an individual who has demonstrated exemplary ethical leadership, the Inamori Ethics Prize has been honoring international ethics leaders, whose actions and influence have helped change the world, since 2008.
This year's winner is Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard who will accept the prize and deliver a public lecture at Case Western University on September 12th.
In addition to its ongoing environmental awareness campaigns, each year Patagonia uses 1% of it's sales to support environmental work around the globe. The lion's share of those funds go directly to grassroots environmental groups working on the front lines of the environmental crisis. The latest tally from May 2012 to April 2013? 773 grants, 18 countries and $5,602,433 in cash.
