So Long 2010
As we get ready to close out 2010 we thought to ourselves, other than pink fluffy unicorns dancing on rainbows, what was the biggest story in the world of fly fishing in 2010?
The AFFTA trade show moving to New Orleans? - Fly fishing meets humidity.
The River Why movie still not officially released? - Come on already!
Missing the Fibfest at Andros South? - That hurt!
Savlen getting engaged to Donna Lee? - Huge!
Oprah going fly fishing? - Two words, wading jeans.
MidCurrent putting out a kick ass 2011 Fly Fishing Gear Guide? - Another reason MidCurrent rules.
Deeter's The Little Red Book of Fly Fishing? - Read it!
3M acquiring Ross? - Yawn.
For us, the biggest story in the fly fishing biz for 2010? The continued growth, depth, quantity and quality of content being generated by the fly fish community. Just when you think there can't be any more variations on new content, along comes fresh new media that continues to move fly fishing beyond the actual volume of business being done. Will the world at large ever take notice? Maybe not, and some might even prefer that it never does, but without new participants the business is destined to remain stagnant at best. As we close out the decade, think of where the industry is now as compared to ten or twenty years ago.
This year make a resolution to get at least one non-angler you know into fly fishing. Lend them some gear, get em on the water, take them into your local fly shop, send them a link to an on-line fly mag, give them a fly fishing DVD, take them to a stop of the Fly Fishing Film Tour. Show them what it is that motivates so many of us to share our passion on-line, in print and film.... and then post the results on your blog, in a short film, or on a podcast. We should use the breadth and diversity of our community to show the industry at large how to grow participation.
Happy New Year to all our friends and loyal followers, see you in 2011!
