Invasive Carp Lands Wicked Left Hook

“We were going really slow because that seems to get them to jump really high,” Brackett told my good friend Jeff Lampe, the outdoors editor for the Peoria Journal-Star. “Jodi had shot at one and was leaning forward to reel in her arrow when another fish came out of nowhere to her right and then hit her in the jaw.”  The resulting impact broke Jodi's jaw.

I have never questioned the orders or the intelligence of any representative of the Federation. Until now.

William Shatner has written to Prime Minister Stephen Harper asking that salmon farms be removed from crucial wild-salmon migration routes off northern Vancouver Island.

Shatner said salmon farms are having a disastrous impact on "one of Earth's most precious assets, the wild salmon and steelhead of B.C." in the letter, which was also sent to Fisheries Minister Gail Shea, Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff and B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell.

Original lost 'Trout Bum Rod' surfaces in Kalispell

For years it was famously lost, but the golden bamboo wonder with the distinctive "Trout Bum" name and "001" serial number inscriptions has surfaced in the Flathead Valley, soon to be auctioned for a children's charity.

It is an 8-foot, five-weight bamboo rod built by master rod maker George Maurer for John Gierach, a well-known author of fly fishing books and articles.

The "Trout Bum" inscription on the rod refers to a book of the same title written by Gierach.

The rod mysteriously went missing when it was shipped to Gierach's home in Colorado in the early 1990s, a loss that Gierach described in frustration in an article in a 1993 edition of Fly Rod and Reel magazine.

The rod will be auctioned online as a fundraiser for Intermountain in Kalispell, an organization that provides mental and emotional health services for children.

The rod comes with two tips, a custom-made glass case, a framed copy of the 1993 Rod and Reel magazine with the "Lost Rod" article, a copy of "Another Lousy Day in Paradise," and the recent letter of authenticity from Gierach.

The auction has yet to be arranged, but it will likely be advertised in advance in specialty publications such as Fly Rod and Reel magazine.

I'm not talkin' 'bout pleasure boatin' or day sailin' I'm talkin' 'bout workin' for a livin' I'm talkin' 'bout sharkin'!

MidCurrent reports on the first Great White taken on the fly by Jeff Patterson of Abel.

Ocean fly-fishing guide Conway Bowman has stared into the eyes of giant mako sharks as he unhooked a fly from their toothy jaws, but he felt compelled to do more after his client Jeff Patterson hooked a great white shark Friday off La Jolla.

“We took the fly out and both patted it on the head,” said Bowman, who owns Bowman Bluewater, a guide service that covers the ocean and local lakes. “This was a catch of a lifetime.”
