Utah Legislature Punts

HB37 and HB233 are dead in Rules Committee.

Despite a robust grassroots effort, the Utah Legislature won’t act on stream access this year and will wait to see what the courts rule before deciding whether to bring the issue back to Capitol Hill.

Hats off to the Utah Stream Access Coalition for leading the way, now more than ever they could use your help!

Utah stream access supporters rally for compromise bill

400 strong turned out yesterday on the steps of Utah State Capitol building calling for a compromise in the battle over stream access rights.

Rep. Dixon Pitcher, R-Ogden, sponsor of HB37, "The Public Waters Access Act," told crowd members their presence made a difference. He implored them to climb the steps, enter the building and explain their support for the bill personally to their representative.

Meanwhile.......

An opposing bill from Rep. Kay McKiff, R-Richfield would keep stream beds closed to the public.

Utah has a chance to end their stream access fight and you can help

The Utah Legislative Session begins on January 27th and the Utah Stream Access Coalition is bringing their compromise legislation to the Capitol in the form of HB37. Can USAC and their 3,300+ members restore the constitutional right access to 3,200 miles of river to the public? They’re going to give it all they’ve got but they can really use your help.

IF YOU ARE ONE OF THE 400,000 UTAH FISHING LICENSE HOLDERS:

Contact your legislators and the Governor, he's the one pictured above fly fishing on the Green...go figure.

Attend the RALLY February 11th @ 9:45 am.

IF YOU LIVE OUTSIDE OF UTAH -

Contact the office of Governor, his chief legal counsel, his senior environmental advisor and tell them to SUPPORT HB37!

Contact Governor Herbert

Legal Counsel: Jacey Skinner -jskinner@utah.gov - 801 538-1645

Sr. Environmental Adviser: Alan Matheson - amatheson@utah.gov - 801-538-1574

If you're not a member of USAC take a moment and join! If there is one constant in politics it's the power of numbers....besides it's free!

This issue effects all the recreational users of Utah's public waters and could set a bad precedent for other access fights throughout the country.

Utah judge says streams are public assets

A Utah judge agreed Monday with anglers arguing that all rivers and streams are public waters, but he has yet to decide whether a law restricting access to them went too far.

Both sides saw hope in the ruling.

The Nuge on Utah Stream Access

The Salt Lake Trib's Brett Prettyman recently had a chance to ask the Motor City Madman Ted Nugent to weigh in on the Utah stream access debate.

"I guess I'd err on the side of freedom. I'd implore the landowners to reconsider and open the waterways. This is the land of the free and one nation under God. This is about a quality of life for all of us. It is critical to have access in the recruitment of future generations of people who love the outdoors and will fight to protect it."
