Alexander Archipelago wolf

Salmon are not the only species under threat in the Tongass.

Southeast Alaska is home to the Alexander Archipelago wolf, a  subspecies of gray wolves. However this wolf is being blamed for low deer harvest in two specific areas: Gravina Island and the Lindenburg Peninsula. In a recent ADFG meeting, it was voted to eliminate (by trapping) wolves from these areas.  this will not happen until 2014, during regular trapping season.

Assault on Public Lands Passes House

The asshats in the House are at it again.

The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a package of anti-wilderness bills including H.R. 1505 the National Security and Federal Lands Protection Act.

The anti-wilderness package allows logging in California roadless areas, clear-cutting of old growth forests in the Tongass National Forest and virtually rent-free grazing on public lands.

H.R.1505 would hand over “operational control” of federal public lands within 100 miles of the Canadian and Mexican borders to the U.S. border patrol and would outright suspend 16 environmental laws, including the Endangered Species Act, within 100 miles of U.S. borders with Mexico and Canada.

The US Customs and Border Patrol would also have immediate access to develop roads and infrastructure on the more than 600 million acres of national parks, monuments, Indian reservations, wilderness, wildlife refuges.

Open Pit Mine Threatens Unuk River and Salmon Stock in Ketchikan Area

The Unuk River runs from British Columbia to Southeast Alaska; adjacent to the Misty Fjords National Monument near Ketchikan, Alaska. One of southern Alaska’s largest rivers in the Ketchikan area, it produces more King Salmon than any stream in the region.

A company called Seabridge Gold is pursuing the permitting of a large open pit mine 400 times bigger than the Kensington Mine. This proposed mine, Kerr-Sulphurets-Mitchell, would dump 2.1 Billion Tons of toxic mine and acid waste in the Unuk and Nass River watersheds.
