The fact that the fish can quadruple the size of its digestive tract makes for a distinct advantage

Researchers have discovered that Dolly Varden feasts once a year and, in doing so, quadruple the size of its stomach.

Other animals have been discovered to grow and shrink their digestive tracks, but this is the first time researchers have found a wild fish to do so.

Reminiscent Chum

August, 2009

Ryan Miller and I waded up an interesting bear infested trib yesterday and sling shot casted to 20 plus inch bows.  This surreal pic is the result of one well timed snap.  More on this event found here

Interesting side note on this photo - there is a underwater sillhouette of a fish in the lower right corner.  The species was questionable to many in camp.  Two guides in particular (Matt Hynes and Ryan Miller) were in disagreement.  Matt thought Dolly and Ryan deciphered bow.  The dispute was settled by a camp-wide vote and loser was to eat a fresh Coho sperm sac.  In the end Dolly was the call and Matt, in true AK guide fashion, slid a nicely quartered sac down his gullet.  Video of the entire event soon to follow.

Good times at Alaska West for sure.
