Salmon Zen

Monte Burke writes in Forbes about fishing with some well known friends for Atlantic Salmon in Quebec.

After a feast of local lobster on our first night at Salmon Lodge, Yvon Chouinard, the 72-year-old founder of Patagonia sportswear, tells us about his first pursuit--blacksmithing. We are five friends, all a long way from home here on Quebec's Gaspé Peninsula, and we're fishing for Atlantic salmon, two circumstances that tend to induce patient, drawn-out dinner table conversations.

"Being a dissertation of the symptoms and pathology of this incurable disease by one of its victims."

Trout Madness is a collection of twenty one stories by Robert Traver, the pseudonym for John D. Voelker. Voelker was an associate justice of the Michigan Supreme Court when his novel "Anatomy of a Murder", later made into the classic movie with Jimmy Stewart, rocketed him to national fame. Soon afterward, in his mid-fifties, he quit the bench in order to write & fish & hunt morels near Ishpeming, Michigan.

The book is out of print but Amazon has it available from a number of third party sellers

Egg Sucking Everything

A Rich Chiappone piece reprinted for your reading pleasure in Alaska Fly Fishing On-Line

I suppose it is one of the more obvious lessons in life that the farther you travel from the birthplace of something truly noble and fine, the more license people will take with that fine thing, and the less recognizable it is bound to become. Certainly the most egregious example of this is the "Hawaiian style" pizza, topped with canned pineapple, and ---for some reason I've never understood--- Canadian bacon. But close behind that would have to be what Alaskans have done to fly fishing.

An Oprah Runs Through It

Matt Labash explains why Oprah must be stopped.

Good God in Heaven, is nothing sacred? I saw the same picture on Field & Stream’s Fly Talk blog. And not since they made us watch a slide show of partial-birth abortions at my Operation Rescue Father’s Day picnic have I been so disturbed by an image.

Jim Treacher responds to Labash's column.

Ask Matt Labash how he's going to sell any books now that he's alienated Oprah. If Oprah doesn't promote your book you might as well not have written one.
