The River Why was a pivotal book in my development as a fly fisher and as a sovereign individual. The best piece of literature I've ever read, by all accounts. When I heard it was being made into a movie, I was just as stoked as I'm sure you all are now. However, there are two sides to every story, and I'm certain you have also heard about the lengthy battle that took place between the author and movie producers regarding alleged copyright infringement. I didn't give much consideration to the legal proceedings involved therein (it's all been settled now), until a friend of mine forwarded a statement to me made by David James Duncan regarding the movie's release. Despite my excitement for the release, it made me think twice about going to see it. On one hand I'm incredibly excited to see this tale brought to life in the theaters, but on the other I feel a fair degree of loyalty to Duncan for being the actual creator of such an incredible story that has had a profound impact on so many lives, my own notwithstanding. I'm not advocating that you don't see the movie on his behalf, I just think that we owe it to him to at least hear and consider what he has to say before making an informed decision.
