The Fly Shop plans fly-fishing learning center at Steiner Lake

Mike Michalak, owner of The Fly Shop in Redding, plans to open a fly-fishing learning center at Steiner Lake off Clear Creek Road in Redding.  The plan is to offer beginning to advanced classes on casting techniques and fly-tying, a 700-square-foot classroom is being built next to the lake. Fishing day camps for children could begin in summer of 2013, Michalak said. He wants to encourage children "to get away from computers and Game Boys and Wiis and be outside in a safe environment."

McCloud River, foot access only?

Photo: Mike Parker

According to a post by staff guide Chris Parsons on The Fly Shop's Facebook page, Mother Nature is attempting to reclaim a section of the famed McCloud River. She sent a giant boulder down a hill and placed it squarely in the middle of the road used to access the portion of the river between Ah-Di-Na and The Nature Conservancy.

Pro guide Mike Parker says there's evidence the rock will soon be blasted.

Should it be left alone, or blasted?

Check out the post and weigh in with your comments on The Fly Shop's Fbook page.

The Kamchatka Steelhead Project

As good as God made it.

Flowing across stark, dazzling tundra landscapes on Russia's remote Kamchatka Peninsula, a handful of rivers are home to Asia's only population of steelhead trout. A group of scientists and flyfishers follow their passions beyond the edge, in order to encounter, understand and protect this magnificent silver fish.
