A very important call to action from the North Coast Steelhead Alliance.
It seems our old friends at DFO Prince Rupert are up to their old tricks again. This time they are trying sneak in an opportunity for more gillnetting on the lower Skeena. This is in response to one of those ‘proposals’ from industry or commercial fishermen that always seem to get DFO’s full attention (meanwhile our never ending proposal to eliminate gillnetting altogether sits on a shelf gathering dust!).
For details, please read the information provided below. While we are always against allowing more gillnetting, this proposal is especially galling as it runs counter to the ground rules established for these ‘Inland Demonstration Fisheries’ almost 30 years ago. Those rules stated any Inland fisheries of this type would be undertaken by “selective means”, like beach seines, dipnet, etc. NOT the same old gillnet.
IF YOU HAVE TIME PLEASE EMAIL SUE FARLINGER, DFO RDG AND LET HER KNOW YOUR FEELINGS TOWARDS ALLOWING MORE GILLNETTING IN THE LOWER SKEENA. CONTACTS: susan.farlinger@dfo-mpo.gc.ca CC it to DFO Rupert: mel.kotyk@dfo-mpo.gc.ca
The more vocal the opposition the better the chance we have of stopping this proposal. Spread this note around to anyone who steelhead fishes in the Skeena region and ask them to write a quick email.
