35,000 steelhead trout rescued from Carmel River

Due to drier than normal conditions, the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District initiated its annual Steelhead Rescue Program in the Carmel River in April, several months early. As of July 1, the program has rescued and relocated 35,000 of the endangered trout and will continue its efforts through the season as the Carmel River has dried back from the ocean almost 6 miles.

B.C. conservationists say Alaska fishermen contributing to low Skeena River sockeye run

A near record-low sockeye salmon run for Skeena River fisheries has cut off the catch in B.C., but conservation groups say Alaskan fishermen are not pulling in their nets, making the problem worse.

Alaska keeps no records of its steelhead bycatch. This despite being MSC Certified as a sustainable fishery. Its long past the time that Alaska needs to step up and start accounting for its fishery impacts on Skeena steelhead.

Smoke rose from his free-spinning reel

He had all but landed the fish when the boat boy on his skiff started screaming and yelling. And, with that, a 200lb shark – possibly a great white bloodstock agent, it was not clear – swallowed his catch and ran his line out 200 yards so fast that smoke rose from his free-spinning reel.

Salt Lake Fishing Report

There was some excellent muskie fishing reported at the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources warm-water hatchery ponds in west Salt Lake City.

Unfortunately the bite is off due to the state realizing they forgot to install the no fishing signs.

Scary stuff.

The lionfish invasion has arrived in full force off the coast of North Carolina and they're eating so many native species they're becoming obese.

Daily Dose of Chum - Skeena Edition

Results from a recently published study conducted by Canadian and US scientists indiates that Skeena River chum salmon were up to 52 times more abundant in the past than at present.

The scientists from SkeenaWild Conservation Trust, Wild Fish Conservancy, and the University of Montana found that while in the last five years the annual return to the Skeena is fewer than 9,000 chum salmon, the average return was between 268,000 and 471,000 chum salmon in the period 1916-1919.   The enormity of the decline over time is much greater than previously thought.
