Fishing for monster Nile perch

Henry Gilbey goes fishing for Nile perch below Murchison Falls in Uganda.

But there is a fish that lives here, a fish that grows to such large proportions that actually the mind slightly boggles at how such bulk enables a fish to inhabit conditions so treacherous. But the Nile perch is nothing if not resilient, with huge glowing eyes that surely must have extra special capabilities for seeing all manner of sorry prey, and such muscled flanks that serve to give the intrepid angler a gloriously torrid time.

We came, we saw, we...

...kicked its ass!

Well, we sorta kicked its ass. You never truly kick his ass. In the end, if there was a scoreboard, Mr. Rooster would have one in the win column - par for the course on the Sea of Cortez. But when you walk away from the Moldy Chum Baja Field trip with everyone able to hoist their very own cocks, it's an accomplishment. One with mayhem, gut splitting laughter, and smiles across the board.

Jeff DeBrown's The Reel Baja rolled out the red carpet and delivered a second to none experience. And, with jedi presence of Justin Crump and Kate Taylor, the waters off the coast of Los Barilles were boiling with all kinds of en fuego-ness.

Rumor has it pen will ink the pages of one of our favorite industry rags soon, so we'll spare the literary dogs-breakfast. If pictures are worth a thousand words, then someone should have War and Peace on their hands with this shit...

We arrived at night to this scene.  It was clear we were in a special place.  Aaron Otto Photo.

Morning came fast and guess what?  Still special.

DeBrown had us dialed on bugs.  Aaron Otto Photo.

Crump had something up his sleeve as well with this sardina pattern.

When running down the man we found you gotta watch your step.

Sometimes it was best to chase them with four wheels - after a quick stop for cerveza.  Aaron Otto Photo.

There was a lot of staring into the blue - searching.

But we eventually hooked up.  Matt Jones Photo.

Same time, same place next year.  If it's half as good as this year, we're in business.  Jeff, Kate, and Justin really delivered a world class experience.  Please visit Aaron Otto Photography and Matt Jones Photography for many more excellent pictures of this trip.

In the meantime, we still have space left on our Kanektok Field Trip - join us for another killer time.

Como se dice "holy shit" en Espanol?

We're back from the East Cape.  Full report to follow - until then chew on this...

The 15 second mark of this video should make sense of the chaos experienced when a Rooster decides your sardina pattern is interesting.

It wasn't all swings and misses though - Cock was gripped.

As was Mr. Crevalle.

Man Plans, Mother Nature Laughs - Fly Fishing B.C.'s North Coast

Patagonia's fly fishing ambassador Dylan Tomine recently returned from a spring steelhead expedition to British Columbia. The conditions weren't ideal for fishing but they were ideal for some cold-weather gear testing. Dylan shares his thoughts on The Cleanest Line along with some great shots from photographer Tim Pask.
