The winter of 2014-15 is shaping up to give the mountains of the west one of their worst snowpacks in recent memory. While many look at the lack of snow this year and are concerned about the economic impact on ski areas and the increase of wildfire danger over the summer, the environmental impact of years like this has the potential to be far more devastating.

Wild winter steelhead enter our coastal rivers in a more mature condition and closer to spawn timing with fish sometimes caught within hours to days of freshwater entry or in their holding and spawning areas. This vulnerable condition makes them susceptible to loss in fry production by improper handling practices and exposure to air. Let’s work together to reduce our impact by keeping wild steelhead underwater.

Bull Trout (Salvelinus confluentus) are a long lived, apex predator native to the Pacific Northwest, migrating from tiny tributaries to main stem sections throughout the changing seasons. Known for their aggressive nature by fly fishermen, underwater they are calm and confident.
It's not just salmon and steelhead that are making a comeback in the Elwha.
A small fish listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act has suddenly appeared at the mouth of the Elwha River after a decadeslong absence.
Scientists were surprised late last month to find hundreds of candlefish spawning in the Elwha, a river that was freed from dams just five months ago.
