NY Steelhead Need Their Vitamins
Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 12:00AM
Steelhead trout have been dying as they make their way to the Salmon River in Oswego County from Lake Ontario. Apparently, the cause behind the death is a thiamine, or vitamin B, deficiency present in the fish.

Alewives be the culprit.......if my aging mind serves me, the predominate forage fish was introduced not knowing that ingesting it causes a life threatening vitamin sortgage in the game fishes of the Great Lakes. Solution? add another non-native forage species?? tough call, that !
real steelhead swim to the ocean...
"Steelhead" there are also non-native. The Great Lakes are like a giant ongoing science experiment for fisheries.
good call erick....those are potanamdomous fish and very little food to choose from
but either way the loss of and indicator species makes us look into our human faults a lil more.
like that clearwater 28 lb triploid that should have never been planted in an already amazing natural fishery!! when is enough enough
