The current status of the mahseer is distressing

The species is being decimated due to indiscriminate fishing by netting, dynamiting and poaching, poisoning and diverting water flows for irrigation which is impacting its spawning, says Ravi Singh, secretary general and CEO, WWF-India.

A Project Mahseer, on the lines of tiger conservation, is urgently needed, according to conservationists and angling enthusiasts.
