Sept. Slab of the Month Entry: Smallmouth

Whilst targeting muskies with what appears to be a tube sock, chummist Liz took a willing player in the form of this smallie.

Good job on the smallie Liz. The fly is the only ugly thing in the pic. Forget about captain ram rod in butt above.

Congratz on the bronze tiger! The fly is awesome alot of ppl dont know you need to go big or go home with Esox flys!

September 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTom G.

Dang!!! My dream fish. I live in NC and fish the rivers for both species. The big smallies around here are PhDs. Maybe my flies aren't ugly enough.... Where was this caught? Nice job!!!

And another thing... commenting crassly on nameless bimbos is one thing (funny). But trashing a legitimate babe who can obviously cast a 10 wt with a sink tip is just bad form. Keep the trash talk confined to Fridays!!!

Once again: time to get rid of the comments section.

Great fish.....Congrats!

@Hmmmmmmm....

Seriously that's your comment? Wow, pretty brutal. Chum really should moderate the comments on here sometimes.. it's funny on the friday pin up but when it comes to a girl who can obviously fish it's not necessary to be so hateful.

Glad to see a fellow lady fisher back up on the SOTM. Great fish!!

FLY GIRLS FTW!!!!!!

September 14, 2010 | Unregistered Commentermickey finn

Wow, I would kill for that fish. I wanna know what river this was in. And fu*k that first commentor with a 10 foot flagpole - Chum - you need to step up and get rid of jerky comments like that!

September 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterFishin' Terp

I think the first comment is cheap and insulting. If possible, it should be deleted! Nice fish, hopefully her boyfriend still loves her after this catch. My wife caught a huge snook at Cayo Lago, Cuba some years ago, it was the first time in my life i had these certain feelings...
I needed the snook for a super grand slam!

September 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLex

That fish has shoulders.

Can we ban people who post crap like that from commenting in the future? I'd expect someone who posts that to be spineless and not put their real email address, but I know there are IP addresses and what not that can be used to do this. Although, judging by the frequent appearances of our friend the watch guy, I'm guessing the IT capabilities aren't quite there.

September 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterFishin' Terp

Liz, that's an awesome fish. The fish of a lifetime for anybody who chases smallmouth. In most of the waters where I cast for them, the typical smallie runs roughly the size of your fly.

That fish will evoke jealousy among everyone who lays eyes upon it, most just aren't so vocally embittered as Hmmm.

You're all such purists that you're willing to pound on a kid, from a state that doesn't even have fly fishing for trout, who wins a competition 99.9% of you couldn't even compete in, and trash him because he wears some equipment that you wouldn't, but say something negative about a girl and you all crumble like little bitches.

BTW, nice fish even though its not a skill fish to be caught.

Killer fish, saw it on the another forum. And WTF has the hater been smoking, I have actually met this girl one time while launching my raft on a popular smallie river, and she is a looker (no offense Milla). Not to mention she fly fishes! That fish has my vote for sure !

September 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterB.R.M.

At least to speak for myself I didn't even read the post about the kid you're talking about, so I definately didn't trash him, I'm just defending where defending is due. No double-standards here, I'll definately talk trash if someone deserves it, but there's no need for cheapshots. I'm sensing some odd bitterness in our buddy above - I'm thinking he might want to consult a therapist, cause evidently fly fishing isn't enough to calm his nerves.

September 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterFishin' Terp

I don't really see how it's a double standard. Granted people are commenting on the lameness of wearing knee pads because, well, it was and is lame. But I think the most commented thing about that post was the fact it was a fly fishing competition.. which are and always will be, also lame.

Something negative is an understatement, what the above said was completely hateful which is probably why people are being defensive.

Besides, your generalizations are stupid... seems to be what everyone does on here.. sums someone up in one general statement that has no validity whatsoever.

Hell of a Smallie Liz............ The "haters" are just jealous because they've never hooked any fish of that size, let alone landed and photographed it. I believe the fly fishing world needs more talented female anglers like yourself. What a great way to start the day, seeing a smiling lady with a giant smallmouth. Cheers Liz and that is a very nice fish. You've got my vote for SOTM................

September 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTahoe Trout Bum #103

@Hmmmmmm not sure which is gayer, your weak ass comment or your lame ass name.

As for the slab. Great fish, congrats!

September 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAC

Throw the clouser, or bugger or whatever, strip retrieve, repeat as necessary until a smallie comes along to bite. Fun? yes, sometimes. Skill? no. I'd rather wear knee pads, because sometimes you need to kneel of the riverbed on rocks, and be invited to Slovenia or Italy to fish with some of the best fly fishermen in the world from all over the world. All you self appointed "expert" can go throw poppers for largmouths or plastic crawfish for smallies. More river room for me, thanks.

September 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterBFD. Not even close to a SOTM

Nice fish - whether it's skill or luck, I've never caught one that nice, so it's worthy of celebrating in my book. Just cause you don't need to learn latin and buy a monacle to recognize the forage, or get invited to fancy European countries (who of course are naturally better than us, obviously) to fish with Pierre and Sergio, doesn't mean it's not fun and doesn't mean it's not flyfishing. The sport is what you make it - different strokes for different folks - let's agree on that and chill with the insults.

September 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAverage American

Damn that is a loaf.

How many inches is that smallie? I need to know for SOTM voting. I mean smallie size can be tough to tell how big depending on who holds it.

September 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLength of fish?

Thats what I'm talkin' about...Let's GOOOOO Mountaineers!!! I miss WVU...mostly the women, beer, and fish!! (although maine ain't bad) Nice fish WVU chick!

September 14, 2010 | Unregistered Commentersaltydog003

That's a damn good fish, I'd rather catch a big smallie on the long rod than a rainbow in the same pound class any day. Nice job!

September 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJughead

Whoever this guy is that thinks catching a smallie of that size doesn't take skill is a idiot. That fish may of not taken skill to catch maybe he was just hungry I've seen alot of Dumb @sses catch big trout in my day. The fact is that Smallie would eat those little trout you catch on your knees while you have your knee pads on.
