Beyond Searsville Dam Benefit Dinner

This Thursday Night in Palo Alto, Beyond Searsville Dam will be throwing a benefit dinner with Yvon Chouinard as the special guest speaker. Beyond Searsville Dam has been advocating for the removal of Stanford University's antiquated and ecologically destructive Searsville Dam. The dam blocks steelhead from over ten miles of historic spawning and rearing habitat upstream and adversely alters habitat downstream. All proceeds from the dinner will go to the next phase of their ongoing efforts for responsible removal of the dam.

All the event details can be found here.

Would you buy a used car from this man?

One interesting side note is that Chouinard's 2004 Toyota Prius is one of the many auction items.

Salmon Zen

Monte Burke writes in Forbes about fishing with some well known friends for Atlantic Salmon in Quebec.

After a feast of local lobster on our first night at Salmon Lodge, Yvon Chouinard, the 72-year-old founder of Patagonia sportswear, tells us about his first pursuit--blacksmithing. We are five friends, all a long way from home here on Quebec's Gaspé Peninsula, and we're fishing for Atlantic salmon, two circumstances that tend to induce patient, drawn-out dinner table conversations.

Set Gold Standard for Ocean Health Care

Yvon Chouinard recently wrote a guest opinion piece in the Santa Barbara Independent advocating for the approval of the Marine Life Protection Act in Southern California that restricts fishing in designated protected areas.

The MLPA takes us a step towards making the 21st century the Century of the Environment, as Edward O. Wilson calls for in his 2002 book, The Future of Life. Government, the private sector, and science need to come together and cooperate to find ways of solving the major environmental challenges we face. All of California’s ocean users, from surfers and environmentalists to fishermen and scientists, have been called in to take part in the public process of establishing this important network, which in addition to safeguarding some of our priceless ocean habitat, will make the ocean more resilient to additional stress.

The act was just narrowly approved by California State Wildlife officials. The 3-2 vote in Santa Barbara by the California Fish and Game Commission bans or restricts fishing in dozens of protected marine areas designed to replenish depleted fish populations and protect marine life.
