One Woman, One River

Ali Howard has started her Skeena swim to raise awareness of development issues in the Skeena headwaters. Patagonia is one of her primary sponsors donating $5000 and a bunch of gear to the cause.

Ali Howard is swimming the Skeena River's entire 610-km length, from the Sacred Headwaters to the Pacific Ocean. She's doing it to raise awareness of threats to the Skeena and bring communities together around a vision for the watershed's future.

Where Hope Resides

A trailer for a new film about the Skeena from Jahtrout.

The story of the Skeena River salmon fishery. The film examines both the present state of the fishery and the many questions it faces. From the perspective of First Nations, commercial, outfitter, environmental, and government interests we also look to examine the socioeconomic impact of the declining fish stocks. The present situation presents a unique opportunity to address current issues of sustainability and present the Skeena River as, hopefully, an inspiration and a model of how rivers, fish, and people can co-exist.

Quality Waters Update

Tom Ethier, Director of Fish and Wildlife, Ministry of Environment has posted an update on the Skeena Quality Waters Strategy on Way Uptream.

It has now been five months since we asked the public to provide comments on the draft Angling Management Plans as part of the Skeena Quality Waters Strategy. As each Working Group prepares to meet again this spring to revise the draft plans, I would like to provide an update on the process.

Quality Waters?

One of the biggest impacts on the quality of steelhead fishing on the Skeena is the commercial gillnetting bycatch that damages critical early steelhead runs. Despite reports that have shown the economic benefits of the sport fishery far outweigh those of the commercial fishery, the Canadian Department of Fisheries continues their misguided management of the resource.

With just three months before the start of the commercial fishing season, the North Coast Steelhead Alliance has sent an open letter to the Canadian Department of Fisheries, taking them to task for not implementing strategies to reduce the commercial harvest impact on steelhead runs.
