Genetically modified frankenfish one giant step closer to reality. 

The Food and Drug Administration has completed its highly-anticipated evaluation of the environmental impact of the world’s first genetically-engineered (GE) fish for human consumption, and written a document supportive of its commercialization on the U.S. market, according to a person close to the review process.

The company has taken measures to make sure that its AquAdvantage fish are sterile, slipping the transgenic fish an extra chromosome. It works in 98 percent of cases, and the company claims that, in combination with its land-based system, it can achieve genetic isolation of the fish.

Yeah, until some hayseed steals a few and dumps them in the Miramachi.

Europe wants no part of genetically modified salmon

"We don't have any monster pigs in Europe, or monster cows, and there's no need for such a salmon," said Geir Isaksen, the chief executive at big Norwegian fish farmer Cermaq.

Newly Disclosed Government Documents Conclude Frankenfish Pose A Critical Threat To Marine Environments

What a surprise.

Adding a new twist to the controversy over genetically engineered salmon, the Center for Food Safety revealed that, in recent hearings on transgenic fish, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration knowingly withheld a Federal Biological Opinion by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration prohibiting the use of transgenic salmon in open-water net pens pursuant to the U.S. Endangered Species Act.
