Did Enbridge Use Toxic Chemicals to Clean Up Their Oil Spill in Kalamazoo?

Read this report and then consider Enbridge is also the same company that wants to build a dual pipeline from the Alberta Tar Sands to Kitimat. A pipeline that would traverse hundreds of miles of pristine wilderness and some the world's greatest salmon and steelhead rivers. The same pipeline that the Canada’s National Energy Board just ruled the country would be “better off” with the than without.

Canada's National Energy Board should have read the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board's report on the Kalamazoo Enbridge pipeline rupture.

Nathan Cullen on recommendation of the Joint Review Panel for the Enbridge Pipeline

Today’s recommendation from the Joint Review Panel for the Northern Gateway project is an insult to the people of British Columbia, and an affront to our environment and our way of life. In the face of mountains of evidence and testimony debunking the viability of this project and its proponent, today’s verdict reflects the Harper government’s ongoing race to the bottom on resource development, meaningful consultation and environmental protection.

Kitimat ocean program set for oil tankers

Despite the Enbridge Pipeline's uncertain future, the Canadian government is still preparing the Kitimat region for crude oil tanker traffic.

"My conclusion is, come hell or high water, the intention of the feds right now is to ship bitumen to Asia through Kitimat," Green Party MLA Andrew Weaver said in an interview. "Whether it be through rail or through pipeline, it's going to happen, and I don't think that British Columbians are getting the whole picture here."

B.C. formally rejects Northern Gateway pipeline "as proposed"

The good news? This a major blow to Northern Gateway.

The bad news? Even more pressure to build Keystone XL.

The B.C. Liberal government has strongly rejected the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline, stating in a formal submission to a National Energy Board review panel that the company has not properly addressed the province's environmental concerns.

The province did not outright kill the proposed $6-billion oil pipeline from Alberta to the West Coast at Kitimat, but said Enbridge has left unanswered too many questions about its ability to protect marine or freshwater ecosystems in the event of a spill.

The fat lady ain't singing yet.

Seemingly undeterred, the Harper government says it will wait for the National Energy Board-Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency joint review panel’s report — due by the end of the year — before deciding how to proceed.

The Sound of Silence

Singer Paul Simon has added his voice to the lobby against oil tanker traffic on the west coast in a haunting new television commercial released on the 24th anniversary of the Exxon Valdez oil spill.

The singer directly approved the use of his song in the video created by Coastal First Nations, said CFN Executive Director Art Sterritt.
