Bonefish like you've never seen them before

Here is some more video from Dr. Andy Danylchuk's epic swim with a bonefish spawning aggregation in The Bahamas. I'm sure Andy will have more video for us and even some theories as to why these bonefish are busting the surface before doing the deed.

Slo Mo Bones

Here is another mind-blowing video from Dr. Andy Danylchuk (UMass Amherst) when he went for a swim a bonefish spawning aggregation in The Bahamas.  Andy is on a personal crusade to ensure that bonefish are around for many more generations of recreational anglers to enjoy, and so that tourism-based economies of small island nations can benefit from healthy bonefish populations.  Working in collaboration with Bonefish & Tarpon Trust, the Fisheries Conservation Foundation, the fishing industry, local stakeholders, and regional governments, Andy remains optimistic that these efforts can indeed make a difference.

Bonefish Spawning Aggregations - The Video

If you thought the images from a recent research expedition of bonefish spawning aggregations were cool, get a load of the video.

Stay tuned for more epic footage!

Bonefish Spawning Aggregations

Not your everyday baitball.

During a recent Bonefish & Tarpon Trust expedition, Dr. Andy Danylchuk (UMass Amherst), Dr. Aaron Adams (BTT/Florida Institute of Technology), Dr. Jon Shenker (Florida Institute of Technology), and Zack Jud (Florida International University) reconfirmed that bonefish in The Bahamas form massive spawning aggregations at very specific locations during specific lunar days. Using manual tracking and depth sensors, they also documented that bonefish use depths of greater than 160 feet (50 m) when spawning, after which they return quickly to shallow water.

Stay tuned as this team continues to analyze hours of video footage, still images, and biological data. Collectively, this work will help identify sites throughout The Bahamas and elsewhere in Florida and the Caribbean where bonefish spawn and that need protection from habitat disturbance and overfishing.

It's Hammer Time - Bonefish Edition

We have officially adopted a Culebra bonefish as part of Dr. Andy Danychuk's multi-year study examining the movement patterns of bonefish in Culebra.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that bonefish populations inhabiting relatively small, isolated, reef flats such as those found on Culebra may be particularly vulnerable to human-induced disturbances such as illegal gill netting and habitat loss. To learn about their potential vulnerability, Andy and his team have deployed an array of acoustic receivers around Culebra allowing them to detect tagged bonefish and track their movement patterns at scales as small as a few yards. We're psyched that we could contribute in a small way to the teams important work

There has been a possible M.C. sighting.

Below he can be seen giving the fin to one of Andy's researchers while he looks for permit research subjects.
