Is the First Steelhead Trout in Decades Really Back at Malibu Lagoon?

Some environmentalists and activists are questioning the claim that an adult endangered southern steelhead trout was spotted in the Malibu Lagoon channel and the argument that the sighting indicates a controversial wetlands restoration is working.

Re questioning whether the fish sighted in Malibu Lagoon was really a steelhead: if Ms. Rosi Dagit of the Santa Monica RCD, whom as a one of southern CA's most knowledgeable fish biologists, with more time in the field (and in the water) than anyone, says it is a southern steelhead, you had better believe her.
Southern steelhead over 20" have been sighted in and near the estuary in San Juan Creek in south Orange County in 6 of the last 8 years as late as April.
They are here, folks and restoration efforts are, in fact, slowly working.
