The Permit of Oman

For years, Ray Montoya has been chasing permit on the Arabian Peninsula of southern Oman. These fish inhabit tidal beach flats, often swimming on their sides in water just a few inches deep to forage for crabs and snails. He finally captured what fishing these permits is all about using his GoPro.

Cool.

Can't this guy swim???? I wonder why he doesn't wade!!

That is so sweet. It reminds me of pompano fishing right in the wash at the beach in North Carolina with a 5 wt and sinking line using sand flea crabs.

Except they were pompano not permit and it wasnt in Oman.

But it was fun.

My opinion is that this go-pro and internet stuff has gone too far. I personally wont bother with anymore pictures or videos of fish out of water hero shots. Does every hero need to hoist a fish up out of the water and wave it around like a circus carnival prize that a 10 yr old just won? Sure the quick lift and snap shot is cool? but some of these guy just load ideas into new fisherman on how they think stuff is cool.

Cuz then he'd be standing where he should be fishing.

Yes sir, i can swim real good, been swimming for fifty three years, but as Brian pointed out, i would then be walking where i should be fishing
As far as hoisting fish out of the water, a little bravado there for sure, but keep in mind, I've been chasing these Arabian permit for ten years, and manage just a couple each season. Normally I don't lift fish out of the water, but these permit, man, ya just want to hug and kiss em' when ya get one, equating them to a carnival prize? brother, you obviously have not caught a permit. Ive seen grown men cry after landing their first.
thanks for the views and comments!

badass999
thanks, would appreciate any editing tips
seriously
filming is a bit of a challenge when fishing alone on a remote stretch of beach in the middle of the Arabian peninsula, six hundred kilometers from civilization while chasing an apparition of a fish with a camera strapped to your forehead.
did i turn it on?
is the angle right?
is there water on the lens?
you do what you can,
but Im working on it, getting better with each one
perhaps you might like my Christmas island video-that too was a solo shoot, two week self guide walkabout
check it out at notemapez
peace brother,
thanks for the views
long live Jose!

permit can live out of the water for like 6 hours...they are just jacks...holding him out for 30 seconds isnt going to kill it..

Editing tips from badass haha. Hey badass can you show us a video. Seriously really. I see your week ass hater comments everywhere, along with your bad spelling but see no videos. Lets go, we are all waiting.

What kind of fly was that Ray?

April 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMatt

I would have liked to see you go out into the water a bit just to keep from fighting him on his side for so long and exhausting him (or her) Just saying..

April 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTim Miller

Hi Tim
it would actually make for a much longer fight if i had gone in the water-did you see how green the fish was when i picked it up? I could barely tail it-over the years Ive learned that sliding them up on the wet sand is much more humane. I lost a huge permit in Cuba many years ago which i could have walked up on the beach-instead i tried to fight it in thigh deep water and lost it after a long fight. Keep in mind, these fish are most comfortable on their sides-thats how they feed in the surf wash-they even sometimes strand themselves on the beach.

Matt-tan wool crab, tied merkin style-very drab and basic-we al;so get them on hermit crabs and snail patterns

Thanks guys for the views and comments
all the best
Ray

guy catches a fish, lovely fish, and doesn't get to savour the moment without being criticized by those who purport to know more about every aspect of permit fishing, including how to video the catch? what ray's post does is display the proof that permit fishing on the fly exists in oman, a lovely country which remains raw. lots of potential for real fishermen in the country, and lots of fishes to catch...unless one is too busy posting comments on other folk's fish behaviour.
