Red Truck Fly Rods
Tucked in this video of some familiar friends and faces fishing the Eastern Sierras are some glimpses of the new line of Red Truck high performance fly rods from Leland Fly Fishing Outfitters. The new RT line is priced at $199, $299 and $399 with features and performance usually found at higher price points and also includes both spey and switch models.
The mechanics over at Red Truck are so confident in the performance of their new rods that if you purchase one it will become your favorite stick. If you don’t feel confident that it is, then they don’t want you to feel you have to fish it. If your Red Truck rod is not your favorite, send it back.
You can be sure there will be more news and reviews to come on the new Red Truck rods, in the meantime fire up the video then check out the new rods here.

Great Video. But its the Sierra, not the Sierras. ;)
Awesome video.
A rod that will never receive the most coveted orvis endorsement for less than $900 !!!!!
freaking dope
Anyone fished these? what do you compare them too. I love me some cheap rods.
Also, whats up with skipping the 6wt?
Just got back from floating Copper River and American Creek in AK...we fished the Red Truck 7wt 10' Diesel all week. Caught many atomic hot bows and comically large char. Dope rods...could be a game changer.
I actually just had the chance to fish the 7136-4 on the North Umpqua. It was really cool... I guess they've been testing these rods quietly on rivers in California and the PacNW. At any rate, I ran into the Red Truck Crew (I think they were shooting for their Spey video?) and they pitched me the concept of the rods - very cool story. Since I was fishing for the next two days, they let me use the 7136-4 to see what I thought. I met them at the Narrows before I left and gave them some notes. They seemed to be happy to listen to what I had to say. In short, it's a killer Spey rod. Old school look. Great components. Sweet casting. Not sure why they skipped the 690-4 though... oh well... I was certainly impressed and will probably have to consider adding one to my collection.
Good posts. Thanks for the interest.
First, let me say I work at Leland and Red Truck.
I've been involved in the Red Truck fly rod project for almost two years now. Lots of collective work involved. We're super stoked to offer what we think is a great line up of some of our favorite models with what we consider to be the best action.
Here's the quick pitch on our RT fly rods:
We all know that times have changed. Red Truck utilized these changing times to work directly with manufacturers, and build the rods that people have been asking for.
We’ve designed rods for every casting style.
All of our Red Truck rods share the familiar components and features of the best fly rods on the market today.
Rest assured there are many more models to come. We just opened with the offering of rods that we at Red Truck most commonly use. This way, we can be confident that if WE want to fish with our rods...then you will too.
But this is just our opinion, so offer the Red Truck promise. If you purchase any RT fly rod and don't feel it's your favorite fly rod, send it back for a refund. These rods are not made to sit in closets, they're made to fish.
Pretty simple.
Thanks,
Been fishing 4 of the 5 Diesel rods and they are sick!
Can't wait to use all the rods over the next month when i fish British Columbia and Alaska.
Driving to the Kenai River from San Francisco via 16 days in BC....dreams do come true!
NEVER buy a fly rod from someones who claims that they're "super stoked"
You can get top line rods for the same price.
Don't be such a hater. Clearly these guys are just happy with the product they made and excited to share it with fellow fly fishers who love fishing as much as they do.
I am STOKED to try out one of these rods, gearing towards buying the 1953 8wt.
p.s what a great video too!
i'll take 2 diesel 905's
I bought a 7136-4 on Bill Lowe's recommendation..... and it is Dope! I got the switch now too and it is equally as sweet. if you define premium by price or brand and not by performance, you are just.. a dumb ass. Buy a used sage on ebay or... what ever you get a hard on for. I am a Red Truck Convert and proud to be.

And it has a bottle opener in the rod cap so my trout bum ass can stay hydrated.
Red Truck Import or USA?
@Check Ebay...
I tried the whole top line "custom" rod thing on eBay once and it was pretty disappointing... When I opened the box:
1. It was actually just a Sage blank, clearly wrapped by some dirtball in a Tough Shed.
2. No manufacturer warranty.
Potentially not the best move on my part and definitely a learning moment for me. Moral of the story: keep your expectations realistic on eBay.
SRV...
My thoughts exactly. I am more than willing to shell out a few more bucks for something that is made close to home.
Actually, we attempted to "stay close" by approaching the major US fly rod manufacturers with our fly rod project. All of them politely said "no."
After much research we built a strong relationship with the largest manufacturer of fly rods in the world, located in South Korea.
This company “quietly” manufactures fly rods for brands in England, Vermont, Maine, Scandinavia, and Europe.
The level of expertise derived from this rod knowledge is astounding!
We are honored to be working with them.
We've used as many US-made or US-branded components as possible.
Final note, if we manufactured our Red Truck fly rods in the US, they would cost twice as much and would not provide the level of fit and finish we've found possible in South Korea.
Thats more hard sales pitch and endorsements from the friends of the owners then I've ever seen on this site and I've been here a while. This site has just turned into another sales pitch venue. Hey "dudes" its just another stick of graphite.
Wow, some of you cats are super bitter, guessing it must suck to be you. Glad to see another group trying to put high quality fly rods into the market without charging 1k for thier product. Good luck Red Truck.
@WOW
Just love rods... Love the story and like (not love) the guys behind em. Enough to defend them up here.
Sweet rods. The 7 10 had me at first grip. Way to go Red Truck!!
Totally agree with you @Rock out with my cock out!
People on this site are soooo bitter about so many things it's ridiculous. I think it's great chum promotes companies like this. It's a blog, this is what they write about, get over it.
I'd be stoked to try out some of their product and the video was awesome!
People on here are such whiners and such brand whores, it's pathetic.
Virtually every post above was written by the same guy trying to spin some positive buzz about his new fly rod biz. Once again moldy chum shilling and whoring for their buddies. Its just another fly rod company like the many others that'll come and go like all the others.
