Pretty soon we'll be able to fish Asian Carp 360 days a year here in the Great Lakes. Can't wait until all the real trophy fish are killed off, I am getting tired of catching steelhead and salmon in the rivers....

August 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterQueequeg

what the hell do catch grass carp on?

August 26, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterunknown fisherman

so this is what its come to? Why don't you just go fish in the sewer for turds, you never know you might catch one you recognize. The dying fly fishing industry will do ANYTHING to get you to buy their bullshit.

August 26, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterfishing for carp???

Carp are awesome and they are very challenging at times, so until you have tried it Mr. Fishing for Carp, then shut your face.

August 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterRJ

Enjoy your sewer fish there RJ. I'm sure someday you'll be an orvis endorsed carp fishing guide too.
AHHHHHHH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAaaa.

August 26, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterfishing for carp???

Carp are awesome??? Boy, thats something you don't often hear. I can think of many other fish I'd rather catch with a fly rod then a carp. Bass on either poppers or clousers immediately comes to mind.

August 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterWHAT???

$10,000 worth of boats, rods, reels and other stuff to catch a super sized minnow. WTF???

August 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterBobJ

You know I would be in. Can't fish for grass carp in or and wa though. Nice vid!

August 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJohn montana

So exactly what materials do you use to tie a Purina dog chow nugget fly??

August 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterVice jockey

I like to fish in my neighbors back yard for their koi fish in their fountain / pond. I've got my waders wading boots, fedora hat, 7 weight rod, orvis reel, and sometimes I use my drift boat. The only problem is they get pissed and chase me off their property. So I'm starting an organization calles KU or koi unlimited. Anyone want to join???

August 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSuburban flyguy

Hell I'd be in on something like that, they look like they fight like bastards! Sight fishing for big fish, warm, wet-wadeable water, sounds good. And they aren't nearly as ugly as the common carp!

Suburban flyguy,

KU? That's freakin hilarious!

August 26, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterbohica

like fishing foe drowned rats, great times fishing in some of the smelliest places for the ugliest fish ever

August 26, 2010 | Unregistered Commenternewt

Geez, what a pissy crowd.
The tug is the drug.

August 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterPisco

Well said Pisco...
sometimes it's what we got, that we have to live with and enjoy...

August 26, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterraz

... fun to catch and not so easy.

Those that bad mouth flying Carp probably haven't tried it or maybe just assholes with an attitude.

Seems the river these days have a abundance of these fashion boys. They spend more effort looking cool than catching fish. Smugfucks.

Like Pisco say's, "The tug is the drug"

Anyone who fishes for carp know it's about hunting and sight fishing, not your typical here's the seam fish are there. It's an addiction and once it's in your blood your addicted. The raw power they have is amaizing as seen in the video. It took 15 minutes to land the fish but when it was released look how fast that fish took off. We went yesterday to get more footage and to watch a grassie come up and take a Hexagena dry is awesome and not an easy task. There is probably water less than 3 miles from anybodys house that hold carp all you need to do is explore which is part of the journey.

August 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSuperfly

In my experience, the grassies don't fight that great, but they are fun to fool on a dry. The fish are largely herbivores, so we fish modified foam patterns with lots of green estaz or that tri-lobal hackle stuff Orvis sells. They shouldn't eat flies, but on occasion they do. More than anything, they are available fish - meaning, if you have limited time, they are nearby, will (on occasion) eat a dry fly, and do put in an impressive run or two before wearing out. And I'm sure that last part is due in large part to the water temps we typically find them in, i.e., bath-tub hot. Looks like those in the video were pretty hot fish. I try not to place one fly rod fish above another, and yeah there are some species I'd rather catch, but I'm not going to turn my nose up at something that's in my backyard when I have two hours after other obligations to fish. All good fun.

Superlfy, what weight were you guys fishing? Those were full grown pigs you must have had a little backbone.

August 26, 2010 | Unregistered Commentermangrove

98% of people who look down their nose at fly fishing for carp, when asked, have never actually done it. And 100% of those people will likely have their ass handed to them the first time they go out and try it and get schooled.

Trouties who cop an attitude about sight casting to 20lb. fish who are not easy to fool with a fly, and are often very spooky, while preferring to blind fish (often staring at a bobber all day) are laughable. Wasn't that long ago that people had the same snooty attitude toward bonefish and reds.

Go out and try it before you develop an opinion.

August 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCyprinus

First of all well put JB. We fish a 6wt most of the time.I fish a Sage TCR and a Scott S3S which I find too stiff for the close shots, a softer tip with some back bone would be ideal. Feel free to email me for fly selection if you wish and like JB said I wouldn't turn your nose up on something that's in your back yard.

August 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSuperfly

People who whine that carp are "ugly" need to get their manginas checked. Fishing for something that is "pretty" is really what's most important to you? Were you bummer when "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" got cancelled? How about your criteria for what is worthy being based on challenge and fight? How many trout have taken you into your backing (without current being the major factor)? "Oooh, they're ugly." Bunch of friggin' Nancys.

August 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMr. Limpet

Right on Pisco. The tug is the drug. Year round fishing for 20lb carp... YES PLEASE!!!

August 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAC

Carp are the most difficult fish I've ever tried to catch with a fly. As far as those of you that comment on the water they survive... they didn't create that water... we did. Maybe some of you whine bags ought to dedicate more effort in making sure all our waters are clear and clean. The carp are simply trying to surive in what we have given them. Speaks volumes for us huh?

August 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterFly Fishing Cowboy

Wow. A lot of haters out there. I can not fathom what sort of person can view a fishing video of two guys sight casting to very large fish (for fresh water) and bad mouth it. I just don’t get it. Poor, retarded bastards. For the uneducated…a “grass carp” or White Amur is a fish deliberately stocked in bass pond all across the country to cut back on excessive weed growth (way better than herbicides!) and usually they are sterile. Those flying Asian carp that are screwing up so many of our waterways…totally different fish. Learn your shit before you get on line and start hatin’. So pathetic…

August 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterByrd

Wow. I cannot believe how people go out of their way to trash carp! I guarantee they wouldn't be doing so if they had ever managed to get one to eat a fly. None of us brought non-native species here, but now that they are here, why not chase them? I live in CO - how many rainbows, browns and brookies are native to CO??? 0000000000000000000000000!! I guess we shouldn't enjoy these either, huh Quee_queg? I really do not care what anyone else decides to fish for, but don't try to tell me the fish I like to chase aren't worthy cuz its way off base. I don't tell you that your girlfriends homely or that she's a sewer rat, but someone probably should.
