Name that scat
Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at 12:00AM
Last month I did my annual trip to the Northern Sierras. Armed with a three weight and a jonesn' for some intense hiking, I spent a lot of time wandering the elevation. At one point I had interesting poop sighting - one that didn't resemble any bear or hoofed animals I'm aware of - that said, I'm no scatologist.
Let this serve as a shout-out to the Chum Nation for a little help. Details:
- elevation: 6500 feet
- nearest city: Quincy, CA
- known large animals in the area: human, black bear, cougar, deer
- scat size in these photos: diameter of a medium sized dinner plate
- There were 20 similar piles of this (pun intended) crap scattered across the area of a 1/2 acre
Thoughts?

Aaaaaaaaaah! the pure joy and elation of being able to coil one out then nip it off in open country is one of lifes great pleasures.......well that's until you cant be arsed to pull yer waders down!
It ain't mine...seriously...it ain't mine.
Perhaps this will help.
Looks like me after a late night Taco Bell run...though these are maybe a little too solid for that even.
The Yetti.
You may not be looking for serious answers, but I'd definitely call bear on this stuff.
Judging by the girth and length I'd say it's a sure bet she's game. You know that's the best way to find out if she's willin, check the pot after a poot. If it's girthy you know it's a go.
Oh that's mine. Sorry bout that. My ass had to throw up real bad on my last trip to the Feather River. As you can tell, I'm eating my share of fibre though. It did leave a nasty cherry doughnut after. It was one hell of an ass-plosion for sure. Was like a shotgun blast. Quick, loud, violent. My starfish kinda stings a little still. I'll try and bury it next time I promise.........
Mule deer
cougar.... Look out there thick in those parts, might want to set the rod down and go on a little cougar hunt at the local watering hole
Alot of grasses, probably Sheep or Goat. If there's any "wild" Burros in the area it looks like Burro shit also. Not a shitologist, but I've felt pretty shitty before. Any Javalina (Peccary) in the area? Could be a small heard of them moved through?
My main thought is that we should investigate further. I too have been "a wandering fisherman" chancing upon "piles of scat" and then spent an extended period of my precious "fishing" time carefully marking out a 1/2 acre and photographing every turd within said area. I can fully appreciate your curiousity.
I would be happy to help further. Please send more dump imagery to docdump@thescatshack.com. I suggest I would need to see some of your own for comparison purposes- feel free to send a sample.
Bear.
its not bear, not cougar, not elk, looks more like horse shit
Rath you should of hit me up! We could of shredded those lakes near the Buttes!
looks like Mule, horse, or Donkey turds. Maybe a big sheep or something too. Lots of grass in there.
That last pic looks a little furry. If that's the case it's coyote crap.

BTW, if I ever catch you at any of my favorite haunts, the next pile of crap you encounter will be the one I deposit in your sleeping bag.
Definitely Big Foot, Definitely
North American Primate.........undoubtedly
Always fish with the dudes you can out-run,,, when you don't
know your turds and mushrooms...
Definiteily not bear, deer, cougar, or bobcat. I guess yotes or wolves. But that last photo looks a bit different.
For future reference, an ipod scat app: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/scat/id307010347?mt=8
or if you are not tech savy, a scarf: http://www.naturepavilion.com/nowobaanscgu.html
Yetti for sure.
That was me, I'm sorry. I know you're suppose to do that farther from the river, but that was an extreme emergency, wont happen again, Aaron
It is burro and horse dung.
