Patagonia founder and owner, Yvon Chouinard, talks about the creation and evolution of the SST Jacket. Now made from a new 3-layer nylon ripstop waterproof/breathable fabric, the new SST is durable, extremely light, and fully recyclable.

Yvon,

You make great shit; and you're eco-contious... But DAMN! why do i have to sell testicles to be able to afford it...

My first SST was awesome. After years, the waterproof film inside peeled off and Patagonia replaced it, with something much cheaper, thinner, less rugged, and not nearly as well built. Hope the new SST is a good one. The one they replaced mine with made me want to go to SImms or Cloudveil for another wading jacket.

I still have an SST that should have died years ago. Good shit.

I had the original deep wading jacket which was the short version of the earlier version of the SST. But I 'lost' it. The new deep wading jackets aren't as good IMO. Thin ripstop febric skinny non-bellowed pockets and zipped napoleon chest pockets. Why? If anyone has Yvons ear please ask him to make the DWJ the it used to be. It wad perfect and they changed it :-(

The jacket has serious design flaws, sad to report. When the main pockets are unzipped they interfere with rowing. I've had some dangerous experiences there, and now am careful to zip them up before dropping into whitewater. Also, when zippers are open they wear on the inside arm and wear holes.

Sadly, it seems like the jacket was designed by someone who only sits in the client seat. I support Patagonia, but this is lame.
