Awesome and Not So Awesome Videos
Monday, July 20, 2009 at 12:01AM
Ryan at the Big Pull is back in internet range and puts up a new dispatch and some videos from opposite ends of the awesomeness spectrum.
Mike Kasic, A.K.A. the fish man, swims the Yellowstone River with resident cutties and shares the threats they face. This 10 minute mini-documentary followed one of the three episodes of the BBC production of Yellowstone.

Who wouldn't want to become a Yellowstone cutthroat, just for an hour or two? I never considered just donning a fish costume and jumping in! Kasic is an inspiration ....
we forget over there they actually manage their fisheries and have fish in the rivers ,unlike the northwest where the fish have come back so sparse.Id say taking home three fish in a day is a bit excessive though .
From the "not so awesome" video: The translation from norwegian to english is something along the lines of "This fish was obviously bleeding from the gills, we tried to revive it but without any success".... Bet the guys names is Mr. English. Monster fish though... monster.
Ya, Norwegian management of salmon stocks is light years ahead that of the Pac NW. There are problems in some areas with netting, but in most places sustainable harvest of wild fish is the rule rather than the exception. The Alta is even a special case in that the locals (meaning only residents of Altmark) are only permitted a week on the river every year, and non-locals (everyone else) can expect to pay upwards of $30,000USD for a week on the river. With pressure this light on a river that recieves such large runs, the removal of a 50lb buck really shouldnt be an issue.
The only issue I have with the video is that he didnt immediately brain the fish as soon as it was decided the fish would be kept.
Props to the fish man for creating awareness and pulling at the heartstrings with awesome footage, commentary and soundtrack.
The 50 pounder was awesome, and probably delicious too, especially smoked. The yellowstone one was just gay, like most british stuff.
thats pathetic...
Yeah, I think the point of posting these two films together is to show, side by side, how our fisheries management sucks and Norwegian fisheries management doesn't suck so bad. You have to consider that the idea of catch-and-release is mainstream for us because our early management decisions were terrible in hindsight, and our fisheries are largely depleted because of those decisions. If we had had better management in the past, our gut reaction wouldn't be to release everything we keep. Personally, I like the taste of fish, and I thihk putting one I caught on the plate now and then keeps me in tune with my biologic -- not just asthetic-- need for them. Hats off to the salmon slayer and to the Yellowstone merman. Both awesome videos in their own right.
Gee, what a surprise, the french guy doesn't like it.
Funny, I didn't notice any homosexual cutthroats....
they pay licence per fish caught, not per day limit.
