Single Asian carp found in massive fish kill

By now you've probably heard that they found traces of Asian carp DNA on the wrong side of the electric barrier designed to keep the carp menace from invading the Great Lakes. Given the consequences of the buggers making it into the Great Lakes, combined with the need to shut down the electric barrier for maintenance, officials decided to poison a 6 mile segment of the of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal. So far one Asian carp has been found among the carcasses of what could be up to 200,000 pounds of dead fish.

How big is the kill?

The fish kill is so large that rotenone's manufacturer couldn't supply enough of the poison. Illinois officials had to get donations from fish and wildlife officials in other states. A crew of 200 will work five days to execute the fish kill.  LINK (Via: USA Today)

The Army Corp of Imbeciles

One of the options to help keep the carp out of Lake Michigan is to close the Ship Canal locks but the Army Corp says they are not prepared to take that step until they do further study.  Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm and several environmental groups called on that state’s attorney general to take legal action to force the closure of the locks. LINK (Via: The Battle Creek Enquirer)

The sky may not be falling after all

Biologist Duane Chapman knows as much about Asian carp as anyone in the United States, and he says that even though some of the giant fish apparently have breached an electric barrier protecting the Great Lakes, all is not lost. LINK (Via: JS Online}

Close the locks for a few months and go with the scorched-earth policy. These lazy-eyed bastards can't get into the great lakes. As it is Lake Michigan is going the way of Lake Huron (depopulation) and with VHS, Zebra Mussels, and now Asian Carp, the system cant' handle much more. Living in Michigan, I have seen how quickly the goby spread, the Asian carp is bigger, eats more, and will destroy whatever fishery is left in the Great Lakes. Of course, the businesses run this country, the the locks will not be closed, the fish will eventually make it into the lake/rivers, and we'll have a Dead Sea in the Mid-west.

Duane Chapman is on the case? I'm not worried, The Dog always gets his man, I'm sure it's the same with fish.

I would say they are at least acting on the public outcry to this situation to some extent. I would love to have participated in the fish kill and seen what the ACTUAL results of it were.. one asian carp out of 200,000 estimated pounds of fish? Do we have some guy down there netting fish up with a crane then sorting out each of the fish before they are placed into the landfill.. I think not. Lift crane dump in truck.. drive to landfill.. dump fish... tell the public your all a bunch of whiney alices because there was only one fish in 6 miles of river. Who is supplying the media with that number? Is it propaganda telling us that the electrical dog fence that we depend on is always going to work? Have you ever seen a dog hit his limit on the electrical fence and not know which way to go so he just runs... whos to say what way and how far he runs..

Does anyone know if there is any risk that any carp have already made it past the electric barrier, past the lock, and into Lake Michigan?
As an avid fisherman - who loves spending time on our beautiful Michigan rivers catching and releasing our gorgeous Michigan trout, salmon and steelhead, it would be like losing a loved one if those beasts get in our water.
CLOSE THE CANAL!!!!!
Write your governors and reprentatives!!!
