Just when we thought we'd seen it all - do yourself a favor and watch this guy rail on Kalum steelhead in this video.

Tenkara = mountain river fish!
Nice scuba suit and 16' pool cue. Friggin bait dunkers.
While the video is amazing, and shows that with the right equipment you don't really need a reel, the method and the equipment he is using is keiryu, not tenkara. Tenkara is fly fishing. Keiryu is bait fishing (no value judgements here, just descriptions). Tenkara rods are very light and are designed to cast a weightless fly with a line that is lighter than a 000 weight, and for targetting fish much smaller than steelhead. Keiryu rods are generally much longer and heavier (they're two handed rods), and are designed for casting bait and split shot. And yes, some of the rods are beefy enough for steelhead. It looks like it's pretty exciting, but it doesn't really look much like tenkara.
So does he have any control of letting line in or out, or is it just tied to the but of the rod?
The line is tied to the tip of the rod.
Nice twist on cane pole fishing: You can put lipstick on a cane pole, but's it's still a cane pole rig.
I wonder what is the strength (lbs test) of his line?
This would be a facinating technique ( keiryu) if demonstrated on daisy chaining tarpon or even sharks.
