Black Wave - The legacy of the Exxon Valdez
Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at 12:00AM
As the debate continues regarding the proposed Enbridge pipeline from Alberta to Kitimat and the associated supertanker traffic, here's a reminder about how oil tankers and pristine coastlines do not mix.

Last time I was at an oiled beach in 2006 there was still oil
When the spill happened, my husband and I mailed our Exxon gas cards back to the company.
We never, and I mean never buy gas from them.
HAY LOOK A SOAPBOX!
I always wondered why Enbridge was the major sponsor of Trout Inhibited/Unlimited Canada's anual dinner in Toromto. Now it is starting to make perfect sense. How many miles of pipeline endorcement will $10.000 buy?
I live in Alberta and you should hear the knobs that live here and constantly deny any wrong doing by the oil companies. They'll tell you the Oil Sands are not bad for the environment, they'll tell you Global Warming is a myth etc. Even the local fly-fishing forums have a hate-on for anyone who is Eco-Friendly.
Exxon and the rest of the Oil corporations are no doubt the biggest 'legal' criminal organizations on the planet.
Revolution time.
*&^# them and their Hummers.
The Enbridge pipeline project is a double edge sword. Of course they'll have the super tankers, but they'll also have pipelines running from the coast to Alberta and hundreds of miles of it will run right down the Skeena drainage. Its a bi-directional pipeline as well. One pipe full of oil, and another pipe headed to the tar sands carrying a lethal chemical that helps separate the sands from the tar (oil). A leak in either pipeline will be devastating to the humans along the valleys and will virtually wipe out the wild fish populations. Greed kills
ecofriendliness is a a big ol sham. It's the chic thing to do these days. Just like Bush Bashing became very chic a few years ago. Most folks didn't know why they hated Bush so much but all thier friends were doing it so jump on board and be cool.......Bash the oil companies and then hop in your SUV and drive someplace to go fishing using all kinds of products produced from petroleum. Get a clue people. Yeah EXXON sucks the big one but quit running you yuppie mouths about this industry because you don't have a clue as to the safety measures that these companies have in place. the reason the Valdez spilled was because a numbnut was driving it and he didn't listen to the warnings and he ran her aground. That could happen again but very doubtful. EXXON sucks but oil doesn't people. We all can't walk to the REI in our Berkinstocks for work. Some of us work for a living and rely on oil.
AK Nordik Viking = WAD
Nordik Viking,
Do the 'safety measures' [that] these 'companies have in place' include protecting the health and well-being of the communities effected by their environmental practices (ie. exotic cancers on the Athabasca river downstream of the Oil Sands, or the coastal communities in the above video)?
I do agree that the Eco trend has become chic; at and in the hands of the corporate oligarchies that ravage our planet and take care to protect their interests at the behest of the common man. A great example is the Shell commercials showing how they care about the environment.
Your last comment "Some of us work for a living and rely on oil" sums it up best, and reflects the entire root of the anti-Eco campaign being reined at blogs and forums throughout the western world. Your job and your consumption of a non-renewable resource are more important than being friendly to the environment and looking for alternatives.
It's strange really, a sociopath mantra of destructive greedy suicide. You have the option of making the noose from hemp, but you choose cheap plastic instead.
