Skeena steelhead numbers are sluggish

From the Skeena Fisheries Blog

Here is a graph showing the latest Tyee Steelhead figures up to July 20th, 2011. Like the sockeye, Skeena steelhead numbers are sluggish. Let's hope the 'big tides' excuse is correct and we see a pulse of fish over the next few days as the big tides recede.

Ojai conservancy obtains steelhead preserve in Ventura River

Some good news for endangered southern steelhead.

The section is located near the river's confluence with San Antonio Creek and has deep, shaded pools that don't dry up in the hot Ojai summers.

It's considered some of the best spawning habitat for endangered southern steelhead as they await flow conditions to continue their migration upstream, Conservancy Director Greg Gamble said.

Rogue Alaska glacier getting people's attention

Photo: Chris Larsen

Income that Yakutat guides depend on from guiding for Situk River steelhead could be threatened if the Hubbard Glacier rams into Gilbert Point closing Russel Fiord.

“It gets close many years at this time,” Larsen said. “This is closer than usual, but, on the other hand, there have been predictions made before about it closing off and it did not. When it does close, and if it stays closed, then that will be a very big deal and a real bummer for a lot of people.”

Landmark Water Sale Near Sisters Could Help Steelhead

A Sisters-area development group Wednesday announced it would sell 63 acres of "pioneer" water rights to a central Oregon water conservation group.

The deal will restore a small, but significant, amount of water to Whychus Creek – a tributary to the Deschutes River. Instead of using the water on farmland or golf courses – the water will now be left in the stream.
