Raise a Pint for River Restoration

The Deschutes Brewery recently made a one billion gallon annual water restoration commitment to it's namesake river through the Deschutes River Conservancy's water leasing program.

Through the program, local farmers are paid for the lease of their irrigation water and then that water is legally protected instream. In the spring and summer, water flows are greatly decreased in the river due to irrigation withdrawals. By increasing flows in the Deschutes River through the leasing program, fish habitat is revitalized and water quality is improved.

A Drift Inside - Göran Andersson on the Deschutes

Recently, the crew from Leland Fly Fishing Outfitters joined Göran Andersson (pronounced Yo-Rawn) of LOOP for a float trip down Oregon's Deschutes River. Andersson invented underhand casting, also called Scandinavian casting, in the middle of the last century, and has been perfecting the techniques and associated gear ever since. His ability fo fish with little to no back cast space, in addition to his near-superhuman oneness with the fly, have earned him the nickname "Magic Man"

National Hockey League Helps Deschutes River Restoration

The National Hockey League has committed to putting water back in the Deschutes River equivalent to the amount they use for it's ice and stadium operations.

The NHL is able to do that buy purchasing what are called water restoration certificates. The program was started a year ago by the Bonneville Environmental Foundation.

Certificate sales are used to pay the holders of water rights to keep water from being diverted from critically depleted rivers and streams.

The league has committed to restoring at least a million gallons of water to the Deschutes River.
