Mr. Bones throws a two hander

With all the press releases flying regarding Abel's new Steal Your Face reel we thought it appropriate to share another vintage fishing inspired Dead design created for the summer 1984 tour.

Dead Tours were oftened refered to as the Golden Road which was also the name of the Grateful Dead periodic 'fanzine' produced by Dead insiders Blair Jackson and Regan McMahon from 1984 through 1993. It also made for a logical title for the 12 CD box set reissue of all the Dead albums on the Warner Brothers label.

A Defense of Fisherman

In 1901, the Saturday Evening Post printed former President Grover Cleveland's “Defense of Fishermen,” in which Cleveland rose to protect the honor of the American angler. Critics, he claimed, were unjustly accusing fishermen (there is no mention of fishing women) of  “certain shortcomings and faults”: laziness, profanity, and dishonesty.

Vintage Chum - Fear and Loathing in Hawaii Edition

The photo shows American gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson on the Kailua Pier in Kona, Hawaii. Thompson is standing alongside a 308 pounds marlin he caught while fishing aboard the Humdinger. In his left hand, he is holding what is described as “a short-handled Samoan war club” which was used to kill the beast. The whole story is told in letters Thompson wrote to his friend, the famous illustrator Ralph Steadman, to whom the photo is dedicated. Thompson signed the photo “Lono”, a Hawaiian deity he believes to be the resurrection of.

Steadman illustrated the event in this piece called the Hook Up for Thompson's book The Curse of Lono.
