Salmon fishing in the middle of Canada's largest city
Sunday, September 30, 2012 at 12:02AM
The salmon are back in record numbers in Toronto's Humber River. Here, this sport fisherman battles with a roughly 25 pound Atlantic salmon just north of The Old Mill on Bloor Street.

the laws in Ontario state that it is illegal to fish less than 50 meters from a waterfall as the gentleman in the movie clip is doing...thus this practice is illegal.
I'd have to see the fish to believe this. And I'm sure he had to battle with 25 Eastern Europeans and Asians before he could have a shot at that fish.
Also I don't think that is an atlantic...it takes longer than a minute to land a 25lb atlantic...plus lake run atlantics usually top out at 15lbs...looks like a chinook to me.
Nice floss job, the fish probably stuck out like a sore thumb.
David Clark --> that part of the Humber, the regs are 25 meters from the dam and it is clearly posted on both sides of the river with signs and markers.
Check your regs before you start throwing out false accusations.
The angler was between 35 to 40 meters from the dam casting into a pool.
Steeliedan --> I guess because you were not there, you like to accuse everyone of 'flossing' every fish that you see caught?
Have you even fly fish or float fish (via centerpin reel) for salmon and steelhead like your name suggests?
If so, I guess you floss every salmon and chrome you catch too!
Jimbob, it's definitely a Chinook. Atlantics are rare and few on the north side of Lake Ontario tribs despite the valiant efforts of both US/Canada to restock the species.
Someday hopefully the Atlantics will return to quantities where we can fish for them in the northern tribs.
David Clark --> Page 8 Recreational Fishing Regulations 2012, Province of Ontario
Under General Prohibitions - It is Illegal to: Section
"Fish within 22.9 meters downstream from the lower entrance..."
ALL dams on the Humber are clearly marked with signs and posts. This angler was at least 35 meters from the dam.
The first dam north of Lake Ontario on the Humber is clearly marked at the 60 meters for no fishing (exception), and all dams thereafter and north of the first one are clearly marked at 25 meters with signs and posts.
Read your regs before you publicly accuse anglers of breaking the law because it makes you look...well...like the 'stupid' one.

David Clark --> first thing, you are incorrect in your statement that the Ontario laws state 50 meters from the dam. Ontario regulations states that you cannot fish 22.9 meters from the dam.
Second, how do you know that the angler in the video is breaking the law? Can you actually tell from the video that he is on the wrong side of the 22.9 meter line?
I walked and legally fished every inch of the Humber from Lake Ontario up to Eglinton Ave. With 6 dams in this area, I know exactly which dam this video was taken. See that rock that is closest to the waterfall / dam in the middle of the video? That rock is approx. 28 meters from the waterfall and is on the legal side of the 22.9 meter line where he is legally permitted to fish.
So before you continue to throw out your false BS and accuse anglers of breaking the law, maybe you should first do your homework so you don't look like an idiot on the Internet.
BTW, thanks Moldy Chum for sharing the video and seeing some salmon action!
SteelieDan --> It's so sad to see fellow anglers negatively bashing another angler on the Internet.
I guess with your great super-powers, you can see that the angler was flossing the salmon?
Do you know the behaviour of salmon when they are running upriver to spawn? Yes salmon actually do strike but not for feeding. Read a book or google it, you may learn something.
Also, put your money where your mouth is and let's see a video of the Great SteelieDan river fishing for salmon or otherwise STFU because your stupid comment further illustrates your gross ignorance.
BTW Moldy Chum, thanks for sharing the video. It's great to see fellow anglers hooking up a fish!
That's illegal to fish that close to the dam, and looks like a chinook.
Fridklsdci --> Hey Frid, read my above comments. How do you KNOW the angler is fishing illegally? Do you know the area of the Humber? Were you there when he caught the chinny? How can you tell from the angle of the video that the angler was on the illegal side of the 22.9 metre limit?
See that rock in the middle of the video closest to the dam? That rock is at approx. 28 metres from the dam.
Read the regs and you will learn that the limit is 22.9 metres from the dam and that part of the river is clearly marked with signs and posts.
So back up your comment with facts because your comment just further shows your ignorance.
If you are too lazy to look up the regs, here's the URL.

So it must be your Internet superpowers David Clark and Fridklsdci have that they can tell how close the angler was in the video?
FYI, he was at least 35 metres from the dam. Ontario Regs are 22.9 metres (see link above) so he was NOT illegally fishing according to your frivolous allegations.
Disgusting that these two 'anglers' accusing other anglers of illegally fishing when they don't have the basis to do so (cannot tell from the video angle nor were they present) and they do not know the Ontario fishing regulations.
Guys, get a life and get out fishing more...the Internet is ruining your brain.
