what you call brilliant i call a bunch of guys who have no clue what steelhead fishing is all about or what it means to be a steelhead fisherman. The probleming with trying to argue that to anyone who thinks nymphing is "cool" is that they are mostly too caught up in being cool and a "rebel" to even think for a moment about what they are doing and why maybe they shouldnt. The evidence of that being written all over that super hip t shirt.

@ not a nymph

Talk about a poser purist. You immediately assume that this shirt is directed at steelhead nymphing. I guess you are a spey purist. Or do you use a switch rod. I bet you use a switch rod. Not a purist. Get over yourself. Ever think these guys are being sarcastic either. Stay hidden in your super secret swung fly "honey hole", keep growing your cool guy beard and keep watching Skagit Master 1, 2, &3!

@ Not a nymph fisherman

a) who said anything about steelhead fishing?
b) it's not that they necessarily think nymphing is cool, rather they think your attitude is uncool.
c) the Chum is about welcoming all types of technique - perhaps you belong somewhere else.

The belligerence of the "swing" faction is reaching new levels. The funny thing about it, is that the guys who make the most noise are the ones who have only been doing it for 2-3 years max and think it gives them instant "street cred" to rag on other methods. The guys that have been doing it for years and years typically don't give a s**t what method people are using and don't pose on the internet like they are zen masters of steelhead fishing.

Read that line about being too caught up in trying to be cool and then look in the mirror "Not a nymph fisherman".

See you on the river...I hope you're fishing a dryline buddy...because that's the only REAL way to fish for steelhead.

I think it typical the responses above that atack (not a nymph) and would say that it's is by the yahoo wanna be gear fisherman who want to instead pretend they are cool fly guys to impress their crackhead girlfriends....Stay urban dogs...you can't master what fly fishing is really about so get a gear rod and stop pretending!!!!

Your the same guys who bitch about not being able to use boats to access redds that you can drag your junk over for a hero shot on here with a spawned out fish...You will never "Get it" dogs...so stay real in hip sheeit wanna be gear punk cloths...whack and stack them hatchery fish dogs!!!

LoL

its hard to hate a technique that's so....dull.

July 19, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMatt

Wow.

I think the shirt is meant to be sarcastic.

I think that when I was learning to fly fish, throwing bacon and eggs was a great way to get on fish when other techniques were still frustrating.

I know run-on sentences are always confusing and frustrating.

Been speying for 10 years and its fun, but the funny part about Spey is that it really is just blind casting much like we all started with a spinning rod. Swing it, cast it, its all the same. Much rather use my eyesight to find fish and watch them hit then cast aimlessly hoping that I find something out in the water. Not hating here just stating the obvious. Nymphing is way more technical then casting a spey rod and generally more effective.

why is it that when anyone doesn't have the "fuck yeah bro" attitude to someones fishing it is called hate? hate is a pretty strong word. i hate racism and i hate drunk drivers. valid things to hate. save it for something that matters. hate a nympher? i doubt it.

Im going to get one for everyday of the week. Dont preach (bitch) about how others fish just do what you do because you enjoy doing it.

July 20, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterStop bitching

LOL People getting mad over dumb shit I've dunked worms and cast spinners and I've caught steelhead. It don't matter what technique you use it's the memory of the fish you caught...

That t-shirt is hilarious! If we're talking about the swing / nymph debate for wild steelhead I thought Jeff Bright had a really good take on it in his article in the NFS newsletter: http://nativefishsociety.org/wp-content/uploads/Spring-2012-Strong-Runs.pdf.

How can you say you've been using a "spey" for ten years and it's aimlessly casting?
Better learn to read the water better dog and learn to swing and swim your fly!!!

If a bobber is more technical for you then stick it on the end of your gear pole bro..cause that's the most ridiculus thing I've ever heard!!!

July 20, 2012 | Unregistered Commenternotapretender..

Ha I love it. Best shirt ever. I swear there is no other sport that gets the influx of "holier than thou" debates quite like Fly Fishing. Get over it bro!! I'm heading out to fish a double...make that triple Juan Worm with the biggest possible indicator I can find, on a switch rod...just to spite you!! You can keep swinging ur mickey finn.

July 20, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterHungus

Kick ass.... Got mine on order, should have in time for the next local Speyclave....

July 20, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterFlyjude

I once had a friend that nymph fished.

I will hate, and I am glad that salmon here is non-weighted fly only.

When is the one with the spawn sac coming out? I want that one!

July 21, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSteeliedan

You can fish for steelhead any way you want to. I've been successful using gear, floats, sink-tips, wet flies, skaters and dries for over 25 years, and I would say there is a difference.

If a friend told me he was jig fishing and stuck 6 fish that morning, I would say cool. If that friend fold me he stuck 6 fish on a dead drifted dry, I would be awestruck. Why can we not quantify that one is a more impressive feat than the other, this is a sport and an art.

If you think slinging a bobber for steelhead is the equivalent of getting one to rise and take a skater, your sense of asthetics is probably a little on the crude side, and probably haven't caught enough the other way to even speak about it.

July 21, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSteelSkater

"Haters" should think before they speak. In my opinion they just make everyone more indignant and self-righteous, no matter what "'side" they're on. @Fisha, Jeff Bright's carefully worded, unpretentious essay is right-on, thanks for sharing.
