I don't give a shit about this argument. Reminds of of snowboarders vs skiers. I think Michigan has the most diverse fishery North America. Within a 3 hour drive I can catch, small/largemouth bass, pike, musky, walleye, white bass, perch, coho, steel, chinook, brook, brown, rainbow, lakers, sturgeon, and of course all the other freshwater lake fish which I don't feel like naming.
Stockers, Lake Run Bows, Steelhead, Fake Steelhead, un-pure, pellet heads....etc... Just glad I have a place to go fishing. It might not be as glamourous as the West, but I have fished all over the country and I still can't wait for the fall runs of the Great Lakes Steelhead. Maybe I just appreciate what we have, and find it totally worthless to argue about trivial and personal differences. The way I see it's very simple.... Chrome is Chrome.... If we were talking about pussy, I'm sure we would all be on the same page... For those ladies anglers out there -I'm sure a few guys posting on here would be interested in talking about dick instead..... But that's another debate!
The facts that one dollar is spent so native strains can be transplanted and replicated (midwest) or just replicated in place and supplemented (West) instead of preserving the original resource are both fucked.
This is a ridiculous argument. I am a midwestern steelheader, not a midwestern lake run rainbow whatever. We have fly fishers, spinning guys and free spoolers, noodle rodders, spey casters and chuck and duckers. The reason we use so many methods is that the midwest is home to the tinkerer. This is where they developed airplanes and automobiles and midwesterns do shit the way they see fit.
Having lived out east and fished for those glorified rainbows, I can say without a doubt the real deal is on the west coast. When your supposedly steelhead are chased by killer whales and other predators and go back to rivers that span miles upon miles of hard rapids and often dams it's not a real steelhead. A fact and not a genetically implanted fish that never see's the ocean and it's dangers of nature. Call them what you want just enjoy catching them whether it's goes to the lake or to the ocean.
I'm sure a lot of the folks who claim great lakes fish aren't steelhead....use a "spey" rod (even though they aren't in scotland), think an intruder is a "fly"...and fish the hatchery fish with the exact same genetics. And don't forget the term steelhead was originally adopted for silver fish seen ascending rivers from the sea..before any of the "science" was realized. Hence..a nickname, that stuck. Ah...nomenclature.
