A salt water hook set as opposed to a trout hookset will drastically improve the hookup numbers with these fish. Point the rod at the fish and yank on the line for a direct connection between hand and fishes mouth. No raising the rod up like freshwater. These fish have tough mouths. Take the rod out of the equation for the hook set.

We were fishing the lower part of the rivers so the majority of the salmons we caught weren't spawning yet.
The video took place in Ontario (Ontario Lake Tributaries)
