Thanks guys! She was a special fish.. super fresh and clean! Dr.Seuss: that fish was far from making it to the redds. Appreciate the concern tho! Fishing to spawners is a debate worth having:)
NICE SLAB! I was out on there last week among the other 100 asses and elbows ... what people need to realize is that the brown trout fishery in that drainage is purely wild, sustainable and has been that way for a long while. Everyone bitches about people walking in the river in the spring to protect the rainbows and their redds, but what they don't realize is that the rainbows get little to no natural recruitment (most of the rainbows in there are stocked by CPW) while the brown trout have a VERY healthy natural recruitment (no stocking by CPW, all the browns are WILD!) so when someone tells you to not walk in the river in the spring they don't have a clue, its the fall time that really matters.

Walking in the river is one thing...walking thru and over Redds is another. Know what the fuck they look like and avoid walking thru them if possible, whether it's spring, summer, fall, bows, browns, cutties...whatever!! If you don't know ASK. Don't be embarrassed. I'm also curious (bc I feel so bad for these over-pressured fish) would they ever designate DS as fly fishing only? Not sure how much that would help, but it might weed out the serious bozos.
Why would making a section "flies only" keep people from stomping redds? There are still going to be people who don't know what they look like, and no amount of tackle regulation will ever be as effective as illustrated information posts...why doesn't FWP do something like this?
IDK Dude...I'd like to think that Fly Fisherman are a little more hip to that stuff than spin casters, but who knows. Just a thought. I do like your idea though. I've never seen anything of that sort, which is kind of surprising.
I saw plenty of FFmen walking on the redds. Hardly saw any spin fishermen in general. The problem are the guys who've never fished this event and "heard there's some big browns in the river this time of year" show up w/o knowing what a redd is and hook a fish and chase it all over the river. Saw that many times.

stunning fish jake, absolutely gorgeous. i was there yesterday and only saw one worthy fish landed, as opposed to the guides reporting "big browns are everywhere!" .....about 90 other people (yes i saw a girl flyfishing) chasing the remaining 3 or 4 lake run fish in the system. most of the crankers i see aren't even wearing waders so i doubt they're scrambling any eggs....tons of clueless mfers stomping around in the river that's for sure. talked to some really cool mfers too and got lots of miles in so a beautiful day all together!
call me crazy but i wish they would close this stretch during the fall run. anyone who disagrees hates trout and wants them all to die! (kidding again)
PS rangers busted some mexicans with a cooler full of fish below the bridge last week.

It turns out that it's more than anglers walking on redds that we need to be worried about... They just dropped the flows on the system to levels which may expose a percentage of the redds. I was there last year when they dropped flows to levels a bit higher than they are now and I watched, sadly, as some became exposed to air.

Every year this happens cuttbows and bows in the spring and Browns in the fall. What a joke let the fish spawn goddamit.
Amazing fish Jake! I happened to be on the river this day and saw this fish get landed. F#%^!ing beautiful fish! It was not taken on an egg pattern nor was it on or near a spawning bed. It was well handled and safely released. It wouldn't be a qualified SOTM entry if a handful of jealous idiots didn't make ignorant comments.

Great migratory Brown Trout. I find it funny how haters always have a bone of contention for season in and around the spawn. I'm really not sure what they do with their lives half of the year, but I'm sure it's not fishing. They must be rubbing it out, thinking about a hatch that occurs annually for 2 weeks, or a waxing a bamboo rod that their grandfather gave them and told them not to break. Or maybe they are tying up bugs that had some sort of significance in the 50's and 60's, but I can assure you it isn't fishing. The elitists are elite because they choose to be so. It doesn't make them better or more ethical to anyone but themselves. I've met you a handful of times and you are nothing but a class act while on the water. To throw you in the category of a Redd Snagger is nothing short of slander. You are one hell of a fly fisherman so hold your head high. Congrats on the SOTM!
Epic Brown, congrats. I understand and agree with the concern with damaging/interrupting spawning behaviors of trout, but this is not a clear line in the sand like many people claim it to be. What about post-spawn or pre-spawn behavior? And what about other species? If we completely eliminate fishing to spawning fish there would be no fishing for Atlantic/Pacific Salmon, spring bass, or steelhead. I am with you all in advocating for the safety and preservation of our precious aquatic species, but this debate runs deeper than a some dudes casting to trout redds during "hero" season. Why is it okay for fly guys to harass steelhead making their epic journeys to spawn? Be it pre/spawn/post we are taking advantage of the trouts behavior.
hmmmm i really dis like alot of fly fishermen , with their better than you antics. lmao what a nice fish, busting his balls ahahaha. most of you fly guys harass steelhead on beds, dont care what you say thats the water you fish, i fish the methow and have noticed 90% of fly guys are throwing flesh flies and beads onto or beside beds????!? and this year with the fish being 60% wild and 40% hatchery..... well do the math. and o ya i fish spin rods and i fish fly rods and bait cast and probably know a whole lot more about fishing and the fish than most fly fishermen who "match the hatch" in spring. i fish 200+ days a year and i cannot do that with a fly pattern. so for you guys to act like your fly fishing with a jig and a indicator "bobber" and to rip streamers? "spinner" same shit guys. to fish all year you have to adjust. spin or not fly guy or not , just learn where you should walk or not , bottom line is guys all of us have had that fish that took us where it wanted. did you break him off?? nice brown man awesome shot and who cares where you caught it or what you caught it on as long as people arent snagging fish i dont care.

Who cares if he yanked it off a spawning bed. Its not a native fish and might very well be a planter. He should have bonked it like a hatchery steelhead. At least the Mexicans that "troutmasher" speaks of know whats up. I bet not a single one of them had a native trout in his cooler, if any such thing as a "native" of any kind exists in Colorado. Here's to the true conservationists, los Mexicanos! Like I said earlier, "Another great reason to STAY in Colorado!"
