April Slab of the Month Submission: Iraqi Bonefish

Hey Chum,

Currently deployed over in Iraq and a buddy and I decided to hit one of Saddam Hussein's lakes early before work this morning.  This bronze slab hit my #10 woolly bugger without hesitation.  He was rooting in the moss stirring up damsels and the like and was coming back around when he spotted my fly.  The 4X tippet held up well and I was able to get this shot.

There is several of us belonging to a Baghdad Fly Fishing Club in which we meet up and fish together when there is a window of opportunity.  All of our gear is donated by folks back in the states.  Thanks to all for the opportunity to combat fish!

-Steve Peterson

Awesome! Brings a smile to my face. Glad to see our guys are able to spend a little bit of time doing something enjoyable over there. Nice fish, too.

Nice fish Steve. Any info about how/wear gear can be donated? What about flies for troops? I can tie a few and send them over. Anyone else want to team up and send some flies over?

Awesome fish, Steve. Congrats and thanks for your service to our country!

Davin, I belong to a fly tying club that would like to do something like that. There is like 15 of us. With a couple nights of some whiskey and tying we could set these guys up for a while. I guess we need some info on who to contact and where we need to ship them to.

Hey Moldy Chum,

Can you do another post with contact info for these guys? They need to be hooked up! And we know the Moldy Chum Nation can get it done.

Ridiculous. The Americans invaded Iraq for oil and not by carp from Saddam. It's time to leave Iraq in peace. If a bomb explode near, the rod of the soldier would break into his mouth. Idiot !!!!!

What a great response. Spinner, Lo fi fly, and everyone else who is interested in making a donation, thanks for posting and your generosity. Looks like the Baghdad fly fishing club link above has all the info you need to get gear in the hands of our troops. I also put the above listed link up on my blog to try and spread the word in MN and WS. I am going to send what I can and see what else in the Minnesota/Wisconsin area I can put together.

Ernesto,

Thanks all - it's nice to have the opportunity to get out every once in a while, only if it's an hour or so. I've been eyeing another species, called mangar that grow to sickening proportions in some of the lakes in the compound. I've landed an Iraqi bonefish - I'll have go for an Iraqi tarpon next!

Ernesto - no worries buddy - no one wants peace and to go back home more than those deployed over here.
